BHEL aims to reduce dependence on power biz to 50% in 10yrs

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited today said it was aiming to reduce its dependence on thermal power business to 50 percent over the next 10 years from 80 percent now. "With focus on non-power business we are internally targeting to bring down dependence on thermal power sector to 50 percent. Currently, thermal power contribution is 80 percent now," BHEL chairman and managing director Atul Sobti said here today on the sidelines of 31st Indian Engineering Congress by The Institution of Engineers. He said the company is giving impetus on transportation, defence and solar in big way. The company has recently invested Rs 300 crore to enhance the solar PV cell making capability to 225MW. The Central Electricity Authority in a draft paper said given the massive capacity addition plans in the renewable sector, CEA estimates there is no requirement for new coal plants in 2017-22. Based on demand projections, CEA estimates new coal-based capacity requirement of 44,085 MW in 2022-27. But with 50,025 MW of coal power projects already in different stages of construction and likely to yield benefits in 2017-22, the agency does not foresee any immediate requirement for new coal power plants. ref: http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/wire-news/bhel-aims-to-reduce-dependencepower-biz-to-5010yrs_8127301.html

BHEL bags 2 hydro electric plant orders worth Rs. 430 cr

State-owned power equipment maker BHEL has bagged two renovation and modernisation (R&M) orders of hydropower plants worth Rs. 430 crore, including one from NHPC. “BHEL has secured R&M contracts of hydro electric plants (HEPs). The company has won orders worth around Rs. 430 crore for R&M of 6x60 MW Balimela HEP of Odisha Hydro Power Corp Ltd (OHPC) and 3x60 MW Bairasiul HEP of National NHPC Ltd,” the company said in a statement. According to a statement, the units at both Balimela and Bairasiul have been in operation for over 35 years and the R&M of these units will result in restoration of output capacity, improvement in efficiency and reduction in auxiliary power consumption, in addition to leading to better plant availability. BHEL’s scope of work for the job orders envisages design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, dismantling, setting up, testing and commissioning of critical parts of turbines, generators, governors, controls and instrumentation, protection and balance of plant (BoP). Major equipment for these contracts will be manufactured and supplied by BHEL’s plants in Bhopal, Jhansi and Bengaluru. The normal life expectancy of an HEP is considered to be 30-35 years. In the current scenario of resource constraints, renovation and modernisation of existing HEPs is considered as the best option as this is cost-effective and requires much lesser time than setting up of greenfield projects. BHEL’s footprint in hydropower accounts for 23 GW of hydro sets commissioned and 6 GW of hydro sets under execution in India and abroad. ref: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/bhel-bags-2-hydro-electric-plant-orders-worth-rs-430-cr/article9179849.ece

Merrill Lynch maintains ‘underperform’ on BHEL

As per a press release by BHEL’s corporate communication, India Ratings & Research has downgraded BHEL’s long-term rating for Bank Loan Facilities from ‘IND AAA’/ Stable to IND AA+/ Negative. We believe that the rating downgrade is in response to likely operating losses and persisting execution challenges in the near-to-medium term, deteriorating quality of BHEL’s receivables and likely acceleration of recognition of bad debt expense under Ind-AS. As per a media release, progress at `56 billion 1,600MW Uppur Thermal Power Plant (TPP) has come to a standstill led by land acquisition issues. Over the past few months, BHEL has rallied along with the market as it appears to be one the cheapest Industrial stocks. more at: http://www.financialexpress.com/markets/indian-markets/merrill-lynch-maintains-underperform-on-bhel/364760/

Bhel skids on U-turn by NTPC

On Tuesday, shares of state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) tumbled 4.6% as investors reacted to news that a sizeable order from NTPC Ltd may be re-tendered. The reaction is not surprising. Bhel has been a victim of the slowdown in the power and industrial sectors. When a large order turns uncertain, it is a big negative for investors, coming on the back of existing woes of low order inflows and weak execution. Macquarie Research pointed out in a report dated 22 August that Bhel’s portion of the NTPC order accounts for about 4% of its order book. It said NTPC is likely to invite fresh bids “for only 4 gigawatt worth of projects in FY2017 with no certainty of bid closure before year-end.” That’s a blow for Bhel. Existing uncertainties are not showing any signs of letting up soon. Plant load factor of the power sector is merely 60-65%, implying that the lull in new power capacity could continue for a few more years, unless industrial activity rebounds. Till then, it will restrict orders for power equipment makers such as Bhel. more at: http://www.livemint.com/Money/ehrWWM3zLygXQvyo0uK6UO/Bhel-skids-on-Uturn-by-NTPC.html

BHEL Shares Slump Amid Uncertainty About NTPC Orders

BHEL shares slumped nearly 4 per cent on Tuesday amid concerns that the state-run power equipment manufacturer may lose a major power plant order from state-run utility NTPC. BHEL was the top-loser in the Nifty50 index. According to Macquarie, NTPC is re-visiting its tender for four power plants of 1000MW capacity each for its Pudimadaka ultra mega power project. The tender was earlier awarded to BHEL. The order accounts for around 4 per cent of BHEL's total order book, said Macquarie. The bidding for the project was based on imported coal price, but NTPC is likely to call for fresh bids based on domestic coal price, the brokerage added. As of 10.07 a.m., BHEL shares traded 2.33 per cent lower at Rs 140.55 a piece compared to 0.04 per cent gain in the broader Nifty. ref: http://profit.ndtv.com/news/market/article-bhel-shares-slump-amid-uncertainty-about-ntpc-orders-1448927

BHEL achieves record project execution

The country’s nuclear power programmes and the revised emission norms for coal-based thermal power plants offered considerable business opportunity for Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, its Executive Director S. Gopinath said here on Monday. With the revised emission norms, the unit stood to derive significant benefit by developing the equipment required to further control nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, he said speaking at the Independence Day celebration at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at the BHEL Township. Mr. Gopinath took the salute at the ceremonial march past by BHEL Security, National Cadet Corps Home Guards, Traffic Wardens, Fire Services and campus school contingents at the Independence Day parade. The development of technologies for advanced ultra supercritical boilers and coal gasification was well on course and the Welding Research Institute of BHEL, Tiruchi, was on its way to becoming a world-class enterprise, Mr.Gopinath said. The successful in-house development of fully-bolted boiler supporting structures which are being supplied for the first time for the North Karanpura and Neyveli projects was a major technological breakthrough that will significantly reduce boiler erection cycle-time and speed up project execution. Referring to the feedback from a high-level delegation from the Kilwa Energy Company of Tanzania that visited BHEL, Tiruchi, recently, Mr. Gopinath said that the delegation was highly impressed with the manufacturing facilities and the capability of the unit. Panel Calls For Forensic Audit Of BHEL

A Parliamentary panel on Tuesday called for a forensic audit of state-run BHEL to identify instances of deficiencies, saying that performance of the Maharatna PSE slackened in the last two to three years due to "poor risk analysis and business foresight". The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry in its report on Department of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises noted that BHEL has been classified as 'weak' under the department's classification of CPSEs based on new guidelines despite being a Maharatna. BHEL's performance has slackened over the past two to three years owing to a slew of reasons by the company such as retarded demand, delayed environmental clearances and stranded orders, the report said. "The reasons put forward by BHEL portrays an impression that these are 'beyond the control of the company'. Even while considering that BHEL might have taken steps to check the slide in its performance, the fact remains that their performance seems to have dipped despite these efforts," it added. more at: http://profit.ndtv.com/news/corporates/article-panel-calls-for-forensic-audit-of-bhel-1402430

BHEL commissions 600-MW unit of Singareni project in Adilabad

BHEL today said it has commissioned a 600 MW coal-based unit at Singareni Thermal Power Project in Adilabad district of Telangana. "The unit has been commissioned at the upcoming 2x600 MW Singareni Thermal Power Project (TPP) located in Adilabad district in Telangana," BHEL said in a press release. According to statement, the project is being developed by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), India's second largest coal mining company. With the commissioning of this unit, SCCL has now successfully diversified into the power generation business. Significantly, this is the second thermal plant commissioned by BHEL in Telangana within a short span of three months. Earlier in December 2015, BHEL had commissioned a 600 MW thermal power plant at Kakatiya in Telangana. The second unit of Singareni TPP is also in an advanced stage of construction and is expected to be commissioned shortly. BHEL-built 600 MW rating sets comprise a 4 cylinder turbine, which is designed in-house, amply demonstrating the engineering prowess of BHEL. So far, the company has contracted 21 sets of 600 MW each, of which 15 have already been commissioned. A large number of similar sets ensure easy availability of spares and operator's familiarity. BHEL has a major contribution in Telangana's Power Sector, with 85 percent of the coal-based power stations, amounting to 5,180 MW, having been commissioned by BHEL. Telangana has recently placed orders on BHEL for executing around 6,000 MW of thermal power projects in the state on Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) basis. BHEL has established its engineering prowess by successfully delivering higher-rated units such as 600 MW, 660 MW, 700 MW and 800 MW thermal sets, having a high degree of indigenisation. ref: http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/bhel-commissions-600-mw-unitsingareni-projectadilabad_6008001.html

JSPL slaps Rs 123 crore ‘liquidated damages’ notice on BHEL for project delays

Navin Jindal-promoted Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) has slapped a Rs 123-crore notice on the state-run power equipment maker BHEL, citing delays in execution of projects at two units of JSPL’s 2,400 MW coal-based plant at Tamnar in Chhattisgarh. JSPL invoked the contractual clause titled ‘liquidated damages’. BHEL is executing the boiler, turbine and generator (BTG) packages for all the four units of the plant. While it commissioned the first and fourth units on schedule, there were delays of four and eight months respectively in case of the second and third units. The total contract value, with each BTG unit costing Rs 150 crore, is Rs 600 crore, which means if the JSPL’s claim is honoured, BHEL would lose 20% of the business. “We are examining the claim by the client (JSPL) and we would likely to ascertain if our estimates for liquidated damage varies from the client’s demand,” an official at BHEL told FE on condition of anonymity, adding that the PSU was willing to negotiate the matter with the power company. Another official at BHEL said that such claims often arise due to delays on the part of the client as well as other factors like delays in injection of full load power to the regional grid, a requirement for declaring a unit as commissioned. However, he admitted that BHEL has historically faced some problems in documenting delays due to reasons beyond its control. more at : http://www.financialexpress.com/article/industry/companies/jspl-slaps-rs-123-cr-notice-on-bhel-for-project-delays/227871/

CRISIL downgrades rating of BHEL to AA+/Negative

CRISIL lowered its rating on long-term bank facilities of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), citing constrained business risk profile of the public sector power equipment maker. The ratings agency cut the long-term rating of BHEL to ‘AA+/Negative’ from ‘AAA/Negative’ while reaffirming the grading of its short-term bank facilities at ‘Crisil A1+’. “The downgrade reflects CRISIL’s belief that BHEL’s business risk profile will remain constrained over the medium term by continued weak profitability and stretch in working capital cycle,” CRISIL said in a statement. CRISIL observed that low capacity utilization, competitive pressures and higher material costs continue to weigh on profitability of BHEL and the reported operating loss of INR 2,322 crore for the first 9 months of FY16 was more than expected. The profitability of BHEL will remain under pressure over the near term to medium term given the difficult market conditions and intense competition, according to CRISIL. Competitive pressures and higher material costs, especially for super-critical power projects with higher import component, have impacted the company's profitability in FY16, says the ratings agency. "A slowdown in order execution has led to stretched receivables of INR 32,000 to INR 40,000 crore. This has resulted into sizeable working capital requirement over the last 4 years and the pressure may continue in the medium-term," CRISIL adds. ref: http://www.indiainfoline.com/article/news-top-story/crisil-downgrades-rating-of-bhel-to-aa-negative-116031000285_1.html

Bhel beats Chinese rivals to bag project in B'desh

BHel has beaten Chinese rivals to bag a contract for building $1.6-billion coal-fired power plant in Bangladesh, giving the Narendra Modi government's `Make in India' initiative a shot in the arm and writing down a reference for similar projects worldwide. Bhel has also beaten Indi a's L&T to emerge as the lowest bidder for the plant to be built at Khulna, some 450 km south-west of capital Dhaka. The contract would be the biggest overseas power project for Bhel, which does not have a major footprint abroad. BHEL may be awarded 1,320 MW Bangladesh project by Feb end

BHEL has emerged as the lowest bidder for the 1,320 MW thermal power project worth USD 1.6 billion in Bangladesh and may be awarded the same by the end of this month. The tender for the project was floated by Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company Private Ltd (BIFPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). “BHEL has emerged as the lowest bidder for the USD 1.6 billion thermal power project of 1,320 MW at Khulna in district Bagerhat of Bangladesh,” a source said. The BIFPCL is likely to give letter of award to BHEL by the end of this month. BHEL has outbid Larsen and Toubro and two Chinese companies to emerge as the lowest bidder for the project called ‘Maitree'(friendship). The joint venture company was incorporated on October 31, 2012. Initially, the JV wanted to allow companies with 500 MW operational unit overseas to bid for the project. In that case, BHEL would have been disqualified as it does not have an operating 500 MW unit overseas. However, the condition was removed later. After securing and implementing this project, no such condition would be an impediment for BHEL to bid for such projects abroad. The proposed project is a coal-based thermal power plant with rated capacity of 1,320 MW (2x 660MW). ref: http://www.financialexpress.com/article/industry/companies/bhel-may-be-awarded-1320-mw-bangladesh-project-by-feb-end/212920/

Govt mulls buyback route for Nalco, BHEL stake sale

The government is planning to opt for the buyback route, instead of an offer for sale (OFS), for divesting its stake in Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) and National Aluminium Company (Nalco) so that it can get higher prices from the stake sale. The government expects to garner around R9,000 crore from these buybacks whereas OFS is likely to fetch R5,600 crore at the current market valuations. The government plans to sell 10% of its stake in BHEL, while it is expected to divest 25% of its stake in Nalco. According to Sebi norms, a company is free to fix the maximum price for the buyback and this price is independent of stock market performance. The final buyback price is usually 20-30% higher compared the current share price. For instance, during the recent buyback of Pipavav Defence, the company offered a 27% premium to the last trading price(as on date of buyback announcement). ref: http://www.financialexpress.com/article/markets/indian-markets/govt-mulls-buyback-route-for-nalco-bhel-stake-sale/203153/
