Neyveli Lignite may claim more compensation from BHEL for delay in power unit

Neyveli Lignite Corporation may consider slapping an additional penalty on Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd for the delay and concomitant loss it suffered for the latter’s delay in construction of its 500-MW power plant at Neyveli. The lignite (brown coal) miner is bitter on BHEL for the nearly 48-month delay suffered by the power project so far. It is India’s first lignite-based power project using CFBC (circulated fluidised bed combustion) technology, which can open new avenues for utilising India’s vast lignite resources for power production in an environmental friendly manner. BHEL is the engineering, procurement, construction contractor for three of the miner’s power projects — 500 MW at Neyveli, 2x500 MW at Tuticorin and 2x125 MW in Rajasthan. Liquidated damages “We have claimed the 7.5 per cent liquidated damages from BHEL as per the contractual obligations. We may consider claiming additional compensation for the 48-month delay of the project so far. We would have suffered a loss of about Rs 1,000 crore for the delay,” Surender Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director, told Business Line on the sidelines of a function here today. more at: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/neyveli-lignite-may-claim-more-compensation-from-bhel-for-delay-in-power-unit/article4184274.ece?ref=wl_opinion

BHEL open to alliance with Canadian cos in atomic space

BHEL is open to collaboration with Canadian companies in the atomic space once the nuclear power generation climate is feasible in India, a top company official said today. The decision comes at a time when the domestic power sector, the main stay of Bhel is seeing slowdown primarily due to acute fuel shortages and financial woes. “We are going to fill up the wastages (vacancies), right now we are waiting and watching what happens to the business environment,” Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd Chairman and Managing Director B P Rao told PTI in an interview. Cheap Chinese solar power gear threat to BHEL, others: Govt

The government today said that cheaper Chinese solar power equipment as well as overcapacity are posing a threat to domestic manufacturers, including Bharat Heavy Electricals . In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Praful Patel said the government is aware of the threat posed by cheap Chinese equipment for BHEL's solar power equipment project. Going by an estimate, Chinese entities have a share of about 57 per cent of solar equipment using crystalline technology. "This is affecting photo-voltaic manufacturers worldwide," the Minister said. According to him, it is estimated that the global production capacity for solar power items/equipment is in excess of the demand worldwide. "This overcapacity coupled with cheaper prices offered by the Chinese manufactured cells and modules is a threat for Indian solar equipment manufacturers including BHEL," the Minister said. State-run BHEL is a leading power equipment manufacturer. Patel said the government has initiated steps to protect the domestic solar power equipment manufacturing industry, under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). Among others, companies developing solar power developers under Phase I of JNNSM using crystalline silicon technology are required to procure cells and modules manufactured in the country. ref: http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/cheap-chinese-solar-power-gear-threat-to-bhel-others-govt_786087.html

BHEL sees Rs 10000cr revenue from overseas orders by 2017

State-run power equipment maker BHEL expects a revenue of Rs 10,000 crore from foreign contracts by 2017 even as domestic orders from private companies have taken a hit due to financing constraints. "We are expecting a revenue of Rs 1 lakh crore for the company by 2017 of which 10 per cent would come from exports... i.e Rs 10,000 crore," BHEL Chairman and Managing Director BP Rao told reporters on the sidelines of India Energy Forum here. "Overseas market has always been a focus of BHEL, irrespective of what is happening in India," Rao said, adding that some overseas markets like Syria and Yemen have political disturbances today. He said that Africa is a focussed market for BHEL and the PSU is looking at a number of projects there. The company is already executing some projects in the African continent and also looking at South-east Asia and Gulf countries. On the issue of diminishing orderbook, Rao said, "I am not seeing any tenders from private sector. Whatever orders are coming are from central or state public sector companies. This year, there is hardly any bulk deal coming." Rao said that during 2008-2010, tenders for more than 30,000-40,000 MW were floated every year. Akhilesh upset at BHEL delay in power project works

Concerned at the delay in the construction of the 1,000-MW (2X500 MW) Anpara D thermal project in Sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday directed Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited to complete the work by June 2013. The delay in the execution was causing cost-overrun and would hit power generation as well as development, Mr. Yadav said reviewing the progress of construction works undertaken by BHEL in the Anpara D, Obra and Harduaganj power projects. An official spokesman said BHEL has undertaken construction works, costing about Rs. 9,000 crore, for the State’s power projects. It was the Mayawati government, which approved the Central PSU’s offer to build the boiler, turbine and generator (BTG) of the Anpara D project in September 2007. Pointing out that the State was going through a serious power crisis, Mr. Yadav said though the agreement with BHEL on modernisation and expansion of the Obra thermal station was signed in 2006, work on only one unit had been completed. He was irked that owing to the delay the power plant was not running to its full capacity, the spokesman said. BHEL Chairman of Managing Director B.P. Rao, who was present at the meeting at the Chief Minister’s official residence here, assured him that the works, which include modernisation and expansion of the Harduaganj project, would be completed on time. ref: http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/akhilesh-airs-concern-over-delay-in-completion-of-power-projects/article4064806.ece

BHEL facing alarming situation in absence of new orders

Press Trust of India reported that BHEL is facing an alarming situation in the absence of new orders from the much delayed power projects, despite an existing order book of INR 0.13 million. The official said that the company conveyed its concerns recently to the Heavy Industry Ministry. The order flow has been hurt in recent times in the wake of multiple power sector problems. From 2011-12 onwards, issues of coal linkages, finances and delays in environment clearances are impacting the power sector. The official added that no new orders are coming up while existing projects that have been finalized are going slow or put on hold in the wake of financial constraints. In the wake of these problems, BHEL is finding it difficult to proceed with many of the projects. According to the official, BHEL informed the Ministry that “It is an alarming situation not only for BHEL because the company has expanded the capacity, taken number of people, but also for downstream industries of BHEL“. Cheap Chinese import may hit BHEL's Rs 2000 crore solar plan

Bharat Heavy ElectricalsBSE -1.03 % Ltd's Rs 2,000 crore investment plan for manufacturing solar equipment might become unviable if measures against dumping of Chinese items in the sector are not in place, according to sources. "The company is planning to put up an investment worth Rs 2,000 crore in this ( solar power) segment for manufacturing of silicon wafer, solar cell and solar module," a source in the know said. "But then, this investment will be viable only if there is a minimum offtake which is guaranteed by the Indian industry and countervailing measures against dumping from China," the source told reporters. Close on the heels of the 600 MW at Mettur (finally) beginning to generate electricity, another under-construction power plant is about to do so. ‘Unit II’ of the North Chennai Thermal Power Station, also of 600 MW, will start pumping power into the grid “this month”, according to a senior official of the public sector power equipment major, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL). BHEL is the equipment supplier and project contractor for the North Chennai project, ‘Unit I’ may have to wait a bit more. BHEL’s generator meant for the project fell into a river while being transported last year. Though BHEL has another generator ready for the North Chennai Unit I, its logistics contractor has not been able to move the equipment from the manufacturing unit at Hardwar, because of floods in the rivers enroute. However, there might be more positive news from the two units of Vallur near Chennai. The 2x500 MW Vallur Thermal Power Project is jointly owned by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company and the public sector power generator NTPC. The first unit of the project was linked to the grid in March but is not yet operating at full capacity due to problems with coal handling facilities. As it usually happens, the project faced a number of teething issues which have since been solved. Another source in BHEL said Unit I of Vallur is being re-started today and would reach full load in a couple of weeks. The unit would generate around 350 MW in a week’s time and then take a week more to go up to 500 MW, the source said. The source said the North Chennai Unit II would also be stabilised at be able to produce 600 MW by March. Thus, by March, Tamil Nadu would have its share of 400 MW from Vallur, another 600 MW from North Chennai and yet another 600 MW from the new unit at Mettur, not to forget its share of power from the Kudankulam nuclear power plant. ref: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/north-chennai-unitii-to-produce-electricity-this-month-says-bhel/article3999058.ece?homepage=true&ref=wl_home

BHEL working on diversification to beat power sector woes

Faced with persisting challenges in the power sector, state-run BHEL is working in a "big way" to diversify its business, especially in the areas of defence and nuclear power, according to an official. Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) is a dominant player in the power sector. However, a slew of sectoral woes including acute fuel shortages and financial constraints are posing challenges for the public sector major. A government official in the know said that BHEL is now trying to "diversify in a big way" and is working on various new strategies. The company is focusing more on sectors such as defence, nuclear power, transportation and railways. Against the backdrop of issues in the power sector, the Heavy Industry Ministry expects BHEL to move in new directions as well as utilise new opportunities in transportation and defence sectors, the official said. Besides developing its capabilities in the nuclear power sector, BHEL is strengthening its position in supply of locomotives to the railways. Recently, BHEL along with Nuclear Power Corporation received an order for four 700 MW turbine generator sets. The state-run entity is also working on water desalination systems apart from renewable energy areas such as photovoltaic systems. During the 2011-12 fiscal, BHEL raked in a net profit of Rs 7,039 crore on a turnover of Rs 49,244 crore. During the same period, the entity's net worth stood at Rs 25,373 crore. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board cracks whip on BHEL

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) in an attempt to extend the duration of power availability to the common man has imposed a 40% power cut on Trichy's Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) since September 28. The TNEB maintained that the decision was inevitable as it could not leave the common man without power for longer hours. However, BHEL general manager (maintenance and services) J Kannan told TOI on Thursday that the plant suffered losses to the tune of crores of rupees since the latest power cut and that he could not operate the high energy consuming main machine. "In addition to the financial losses, I have to make changes in the shift system. As a result I would not be able to meet the delivery deadlines," he said from the Trichy airport as he was headed for Chennai to take up the matter with the higher officials. more at: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/madurai/Tamil-Nadu-Electricity-Board-cracks-whip-on-BHEL/articleshow/16678414.cms

BHEL suppliers in Tiruchi in trouble due to lack of power, finance

The 600-odd small and medium fabricators that supply to BHEL face closure of business due to multiple factors—mainly lack of power, finance and “intermittent periods of dried up orders.” “The power situation in the state is crippling the units’ productivity. Some units are on the verge of shutdown due to acute power shortages,” says BHEL Small and Medium Industries Association (BHELSIA). Power from diesel gensets, it says, is way too expensive. Unless the situation is rectified immediately on war footing, the industrial infrastructure patiently built over five decades in Tiruchi would wither away, BHELSIA says in a press release. Units are even agreeable for a two day power holiday per week, provided uninterrupted power is supplied for the balance five days, it says. more at: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/article3960988.ece

BHEL to set up a 5 MW solar plant in Chennai

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd intends to set up a 5 MW solar power plant in its boiler auxiliary plant complex at Ranipet near Chennai. An official of BHEL said that the public sector power equipment major is setting up the plant for captive consumption of electricity the plant would produce. The official disclosed this while answering a question of Mr K Venugopal member of Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, at an interaction organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry for spreading awareness on REC/RPO mechanism. He wanted to know whether the solar plant would be eligible for both ‘renewable energy certificates’ and carbon credits. (It was clarified that it is.) At Ranipet, BHEL has a sprawling complex of 163 acres. A 5 MW photo voltaic solar plant, based on crystalline silicon technology, would need about 25 acres. Land, therefore, is no issue for BHEL. BHEL itself manufactures PV modules at its plant in Bangalore. It produces both mono and poly silicon-based cells and modules from wafers bought (mostly) from Japan. With the main inputs land and key equipment available inhouse, BHEL believes it would be able to put up the plant in quick time, in order that it is able to reduce its dependence on diesel-based power that it uses, whenever grid power is not available which is for 6 to 8 hours a day. Under the extant rules of the REC mechanism, an entity that puts up a solar (or renewable energy based) plant and itself consumes the energy, it is still eligible to get trade-able renewable energy certificates. more at: http://www.steelguru.com/indian_news/BHEL_to_set_up_a_5_MW_solar_plant_in_Chennai/285656.html

BHEL plans chemical cleaning of first set of supercritical boilers soon

BHEL’s first 2 x 660 supercritical boilers for National Thermal Power Corporation’s Barh project in Bihar will go through chemical cleaning shortly. Chemical cleaning completely removes oxides of iron through passivation, a technique involving application of a light coating of material to create a shell against corrosion. The inner surfaces of the heat transfer tubes are thereby protected from corrosion and other damages. As a preparatory exercise, a two-day workshop on ‘Chemical Aspects of Once-through Supercritical Boiler Cleaning’ was initiated at BHEL, Tiruchi, on Friday. Engineers will gain hands-on experience in actual conduct of chemical cleaning of super critical boilers. The workshop was of high significance against this backdrop, S. Sundararajan, General Manager, Research and Development and Coal Research, said in his inaugural address. Chemical cleaning practices for super-critical boilers vis-à-vis sub-critical boilers were different. more at: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Tiruchirapalli/bhel-plans-chemical-cleaning-of-first-set-of-supercritical-boilers-soon/article3948563.ece

Power stocks rally on restructuring of loans for SEBs; BHEL up 6%

Power sector stocks such as BHEL, Tata Power, Power Finance Corp and REC registered smart gains in a choppy market on Monday on the hopes of restructuring of loans for state electricity boards. The market will be closely watching any update on debt restructuring in state electricity boards (SEBs), easier overseas borrowing and fate of reform proposals like higher foreign direct investment in the insurance sector this week. "Concrete announcements on the restructuring of SEB debt would boost power sector stocks. We could see some movement especially in many beaten-down shares, including those of utilities," said Sandip Sabharwal, CEO - PMS at Mumbai-based broker Prabhudas Lilladher, in an ET report. "The market looks directionally positive. But with the lack of further news flow, it could consolidate before eventually moving to new highs," he said more at: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/stocks-in-news/power-stocks-rally-on-restructuring-of-loans-for-sebs-bhel-up-6/articleshow/16525387.cms

For BHEL, Coalgate concerns over, new orders inflow and margins hold key

BHEL after hitting 52 weeks lows of Rs 195.05 on 12 September’12 due to Coal gate concerns, has. however, rebounded by a sharp 19% thereafter. The Inter Ministerial Group though nearing phase I of scrutiny of 29 coal mines allotted to the private sector players, so far hasn't de-allocated coal mines of a company whose Engineering procurement and construction (EPC) or boiler turbine generator (BTG) contract has been awarded to BHEL. Though some customers of BHEL as GVK power and DB power have had to pay some penalty in terms of recommendation for deduction of bank guarantee by IMG however Chirag Muchhalla, analysts at Nirmal Bang observes that, this is unlikely to result in any delay or cancelation of order execution for BHEL. GVK Power as per recommendation of IMG will see deduction of bank guarantee for Seregarha coal block while DB power will see deduction for Durgapur II/Sariya coal block of DB Power. However the final recommendation will have to be given by Coal ministry after seeing IMG's recomendation . BHEL has 2x270MW BTG order from GVK Power linked to power project with Seregarha coal mine and 2x600MW BTG order from DB Power is linked to Durgapur II/Sariya coal block. Though deduction of bank guarantee does not pose the risk of coal block de-allocation, however CHIRAG adds that “even in a worst-case scenario if GVK and DB Power were to lose coal blocks in futur it would not impact BHEL”. more at: http://business-standard.com/india/news/for-bhel-coalgate-concerns-over-new-orders-inflowmargins-hold-key/187994/on

Bhel to step up focus on EPC segment as power plants falter

Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel), with a view to protect its profitability, is planning to focus on providing total engineering solutions for power plants as new power projects are hardly coming up due to fuel availability concerns. "Given the current power sector scenario where not many projects are coming up mainly due to limited availability of fuel, we plan to focus on providing complete engineering solutions to our customers," Bhel Executive director (Tiruchirappalli unit) AV Krishnan told reporters here during a media tour. The equipment manufacturer had in 2001 inked a pact with state-run Engineers India (EIL) to cooperate in identified areas of business having synergy of operations and providing EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) services. "We had entered into a pact with EIL to provide engineering solutions as the power sector was not so lucrative then. But when the sector started looking attractive, we decided to focus on the core BTG (boiler, turbine and generator) business. However, given the current scenario, we need an insurance, which we expect to get from EPC services," he said. more at: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/energy/power/bhel-to-step-up-focus-on-epc-segment-as-power-plants-falter/articleshow/16368425.cms

Nomura: BHEL orders over Rs 53,000 cr may be cancelled

A casualty of the coal block allocation scam could be public sector equipment-maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL). According to global financial services group Nomura, BHEL may face cancellation of 28 per cent of its total order book. BHEL said it has an outstanding order book position of about Rs 1,32,900 crore at the end of first quarter 2012-13. Nomura says orders worth Rs 53,217.80 crore run the risk of cancellation. Of this, orders worth Rs 31,262.80 crore have already been classified as ‘slow’. The reasons cited by Nomura are: Either non-availability of coal linkage or cancellation of existing coal mine or linkage as a fallout of the allocation scam. However, those associated with BHEL say the company executes orders worth nearly Rs 50,000 crore annually. “Considering this, the order book is full for next 28-30 months.” DELAYS, DEFERMENT “While the status of coal mines allotted to BHEL remains uncertain, we highlight the potential risk to its order book from projects that were ordered on the back of these mine allocations,” Nomura analyst Amar Kedia told Business Line. Nomura has also indicated further risk to BHEL earnings in the current fiscal. The equipment maker could face delays in new order flows as well as order deferment. more at: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/article3885976.ece?ref=wl_opinion

BHEL to recruit 5,000 people in next five years

BHEL planned to recruit 5,000 employees for posts ranging from artisans to plant engineers and management executives over the next five years, a senior company official has said. "Within the next five years, we will induct about 5,000 employees. However, this figure could change based on the business ambience prevailing in the country," BHEL (Corporate) Director-HR R Krishnan told PTI here. In the previous five years, BHEL had hired 15,000 personnel as it undertook a modernisation and expansion drive in three phases across its various plants in the country. As of now, the total headcount in the PSU was 49,300, including 10,500 in Haridwar, 10,400 here, 7,800 in Bhopal and 7,300 in Ramachandrapuram plant near Hyderabad, he said speaking on the sidelilnes of the 27th eye-donation day observed at the BHEL unit here on Saturday. ref: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/jobs/bhel-to-recruit-5000-people-in-next-five-years/articleshow/16334671.cms

Dependence on power sector may hit BHEL’s margins

Bharat Heavy Electricals has for the first time fallen behind L&T in order backlog. Also, the company's prospects of bagging any incremental orders from the power sector look bleak as some of the private companies now face the threat of cancellation of coal linkages, having been named in the coal-allocation scam. At Rs 1,34,681 crore, Bhel's order backlog at the end of FY12 was not only its lowest in the past two years, but also lower than that of L&T, which has reported an order book of Rs 1,45,723 crore as of March 2012 end. Policy paralysis is to be blamed for Bhel's current situation. The order-book gap has widened further for the quarter ended June 2012, with L&T reporting an order book of Rs 1,53,095 crore, its highest till date, compared to Bhel's order book of Rs 1,32,900 crore, which is lower than that in March 2012. more at: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-company/earnings/earnings-analysis-/dependence-on-power-sector-may-hit-bhels-margins/articleshow/16332939.cms

Rising risks to Bhel’s earnings to hit valuations

Risks to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd’s (Bhel) earnings are only increasing. Earlier concerns about falling order inflows at the country’s largest power equipment maker have now given way to concerns on its existing orders. The recent controversy on coal fields could jeopardize its revenue and earnings growth, which is already on the decline. A section of analysts estimate that nearly one-fifth of its current order book of Rs. 1.39 lakh crore is linked to projects that may directly or indirectly be impacted by the controversy. A report by JPMorgan Chase and Co. says that Bhel has a 42% market share in the 12th Five-Year Plan’s coal-based projects, in terms of projects outlined by the Planning Commission for execution in the five years ending March 2017. Further, mere orders seem inconsequential given the current state of the power sector. Analysts estimate that between fiscal 2007 and 2012, about 135,000 megawatts (MW) worth of orders were placed, but only 53,000 MW were commissioned. With a huge exposure to the power sector, given its paucity of gas and coal linkages, analysts say existing projects are likely to be delayed or even cancelled. more at: http://www.livemint.com/2012/09/09220423/Rising-risks-to-Bhel8217s-e.html

BHEL may take 65% hit on earnings, say foreign brokerages

Foreign brokerages have turned the heat on state-owned engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) over the coal block allocation scam, dubbed ‘Coalgate’. In their latest reports, Nomura and Macquarie have warned their clients BHEL might be in deep trouble due to a huge potential risk to its order book. Nomura has said 28 per cent of BHEL’s order backlog is at risk of cancellation due to either non-availability of coal linkage or cancellation of existing linkages due to the coal allocation scam. In the worst-scenario analysis, Macquarie said, BHEL’s earnings might decline 65 per cent by 2014-15 from the 2011-12 level, while its stock price could more than halve from the current level. Domestic brokerage Antique has also highlighted the downside risk on BHEL’s earnings and return on equity. BHEL’s stock, however, wasn’t impacted by the spate of negative reports on Friday, as the domestic markets rallied, tracking global peers, after the European Central Bank’s bond-buying commitment. ref: http://business-standard.com/india/news/bhel-may-take-65-hitearnings-say-foreign-brokerages/485761/

Some Bhel orders at risk due to coal-gate: Nomura

Nomura says about 28 per cent of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd's order book is at risk of cancellation or deferment due to either non-availability of coal linkage or cancellation of existing linkage, following the coal allocation scam, popularly dubbed coal-gate. Coal-gate is a short-hand reference to the CAG report published on August 17 that questioned the government's practice of awarding coal mining concessions to companies without competitive bidding, potentially costing the treasury billions of dollars in lost revenues. Nomura adds the coal allocation scam puts further risks to its FY13 earnings estimates for the company. In another report, Macquarie said: "BHEL is a value trap, stay clear", as in its worst-scenario analysis, BHEL's earnings can decline by 65 per cent in FY15 from FY12 levels and the stock could move closer to Rs. 100. Why BHEL shares are down 8% in two days

Shares in BHEL traded at the bottom of the 50-share Nifty for a second straight day. The heavy equipment maker was the top loser on the Nifty on Wednesday too. Investment bank has Citi downgraded the stock to "sell" with a target of Rs. 200 citing lack of visibility in new orders. BHEL is struggling to see light at the end of the tunnel, Citi said in a report on the state-run firm today. Every incremental order would be a 'hard-fought battle' for BHEL, Citi added. The investment bank said that BHEL is getting structurally de-rated. The stock looks cheap but earnings per share will decline every year, it said. BHEL shares traded at less than 5-times earnings in their previous down cycles though at current market price the stock trades at 9-10-times FY'13 EPS, suggesting further downside in share prices. ref: http://profit.ndtv.com/news/market/article-why-bhel-shares-are-down-8-in-two-days-310396

ONGC, BHEL, CIL and NTPC to kick-start 'Divestment ETF', a move to help government raise Rs 4,000 crore

Oil & gas producer ONGC, mining major Coal India, power generator NTPC and power equipment maker BHEL could be among the state-run companies that are expected to constitute the much-awaited 'disinvestment ETF'. The Department of Disinvestment (DoD), which has received several suggestions on the concept note it circulated on the operationalisation of 'disinvestment ETFs', is likely to finalise the ETF structure by including top PSUs like ONGC and Coal India. The ETF structure will have about 25-30 PSU stocks - many of which could be small and less popular PSUs. "The earlier plan was to float an ETF with lesser-known PSU companies like Hindustan Copper, HAL and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam as underlying shares. However, keeping in mind low investor appetite for equities and bad market conditions, the department has decided to include big companies in the ETF structure," said a senior DoD official. more at: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/finance/ongc-bhel-cil-and-ntpc-to-kick-start-divestment-etf-a-move-to-help-government-raise-rs-4000-crore/articleshow/16023140.cms

Why BHEL is now also in the road-building business

In April, when it received a shipment of a 450-tonne stator from technology partner Siemens at Mumbai port, the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) decided against unloading it there due to logistical constraints. Instead, it chose to transport the consignment by barge to Karwar. From there to Raichur, the final destination in Karnataka, BHEL’s logistics contractor is building 15 bypasses en route to ensure that the cargo, still in transit, reaches Raichur safe and sound. Constructing bypasses to move large-sized cargo has become a routine affair for engineering firms such as BHEL, mainly because there are no reliable estimates on the adequacy of most road bridges, specifically on their weight-bearing capacity. “It’s not our job (to construct bypasses), but there is absolutely no way out,” a senior BHEL executive said. more at: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/why-bhel-is-now-also-in-the-roadbuilding-business/993596/

BHEL to step up focus on high-value assignments

Amid intensifying competition in the power generation equipment business, the Rs 49,510 crore Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) plans to step up its share of high-value EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) jobs over the next five years against its mainstay BTG (boiler, turbine generator) orders in the power sector, which form an overwhelming proportion its turnover. EPC jobs entail the entire gamut of project work, including civil engineering and equipment supply, while BTG packages are essentially restricted to the supply of main plant gear — boilers and turbines — for a project. Over the previous five years, the EPC content that BHEL has been executing is pegged around 20 per cent of its total jobs while 80 per cent of the firm’s assignments were BTG jobs. more at: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/bhel-to-step-up-focus-on-highvalue-assignments/993543/

BJP cries foul over tender cancellation

BJP’s national secretary Kirit Somaiya on Friday alleged that the party has smelt rat in cancellation of tenders of two mega power projects to benefit private players in power sector. At a media conference, Somaiya released a set of documents to establish that despite of awarding the contract of two mega power projects to public sector BHEL, the Government-run Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (RRVUN) cancelled the contract and decided to invite fresh tenders in a way that would ensure at least one of the projects to a private company. This was done despite a clear-cut instruction from the Centre. According to him in November 2009, RRVUN had invited tenders for two mega power projects for Surtgarh and Chhabra. Under the scheme, RRVUN had to set up one power project each at both the place. Suratgarh and Chabbra were to have two power units of 660 MW each. Approximate cost of setting up these two mega power project was estimated at about Rs12,000 cores. RRVUN in November 2009 had invited tenders for the same from BHEL, with a seven per cent less cost. According to Somiaya , RRVUN had invited BHEL in January this year to finalise the terms and other conditions before issuing work orders. “BHEL had agreed to all the conditions. The board of directors of RRVUN in its meeting in March this year took a decision to issue the work order to BHEL. But suddenly in April, RRVUN informed BHEL that it has decided to invite fresh tenders for both the projects” more at: http://dailypioneer.com/nation/87973-bjp-cries-foul-over-tender-cancellation.html

BHEL to set up new manufacturing facility in Maharashtra

BHEL plans to set up a new manufacturing facility in Maharashtra for which it would invest Rs 159 crore, a top company official said here today. BHEL Tiruchirapalli Complex executive director A V Krishnan said BHEL, which has a special focus on power plant equipment, plans a 90,000 tonne capacity production facility of seamless tubes products at Bandara in Maharashtra. Though it is in the initial stage, pending land acquisition, BHEL has decided to invest Rs 159 crore to augment tubular products available in the western region, where requirement is high, he told PTI. Krishnan said given the transportation bottlenecks all over the country, the location of the new plant has been chosen near Nagpur due to its easy access to major steel plants like Bhilai and Rourkela. He expressed hope that things would fortify for the actual blueprint by next month. Production is expected to crystallise in the next two to three years, Krishnan said. ref: http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/bhel-to-setnew-manufacturing-facilitymaharashtra_746551.html

Consumer forum wants Gujarat government to penalise BHEL

The city based Consumer Education Research Society (CERS) want government of Gujarat to penalise Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) for poor performance of its equipments supplied for Kutch Lignite Thermal Power Station (KLTPS). Commissioned in December 2009, a 75 mw station reported around 30% plant load factor for two consecutive years. Earlier, state utility Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSEC) stated that the plant had new technology and has teething trouble. However, CERS did not agree. It want GSEC to penalise for for poor performance which and additional burden on consumers. "CERS requested Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission to direct GSEC to recover this amount of loss from BHEL for not conducting Performance Guarantee Test for two years. Somehow the Commission in its order in June 2012 did not pass any order for recovery of this loss and transferred the burden on consumers of Gujarat," read CERS' letter to energy minister Saurabh Dalal. ref: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/indl-goods/svs/engineering/consumer-forum-wants-gujarat-government-to-penalise-bhel/articleshow/15517854.cms

Bad time is over, says BHEL CMD

After a lull last year, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL), catering to 75-80 per cent of power sector business, is witnessing improvement in the demand scenario. Compared to the 2,800 MW order that the power major secured in 2011-12, orders for 3,000 MW, in the first quarter of 2012-13 alone, have been booked. Also, orders for 15,000 MW, placed by distribution companies in government sectors, were in the tendering stages. BHEL could maintain a growth rate of 18 per cent over the first quarter of the previous year and a bottom line of 13.5 per cent. The company, said its Chairman and Managing Director B. Prasada Rao, saw positive signs in restructuring losses and tariff revision by distribution companies, and in Coal India’s obligation to accelerate supplies in the wake of a penalty system introduced by the Centre. “We feel the bad time is over,” Mr. Rao told presspersons on Friday. more at: http://www.thehindu.com/business/companies/article3754688.ece

BHEL plans to invest Rs 1,000 crore for modernisation

Engineering major BHEL plans to undertake capital expenditure of Rs 1,000 crore this year for internal modernisation and expansion of different sectors under its ambit, the company CMD B Prasada Rao said. Besides this, Rs 400 crore has been set aside for a JV investment for setting up a steel plant, of which 30-40 per cent offtake will be for the company's own consumption, he told reporters here last night. He said BHEL has been comfortably securing orders both in India as well as overseas. With Government of India's target of installing eight lakh MW by 2032, which is four times the current capacity and with most of this is likely to be in PSUs, BHEL was confident of sustained growth in the coming years, he said. With many projects in the pipeline, BHEL was optimistic of adding 7,000-8,000 MW order before end of this fiscal. In the first quarter of the year, BHEL secured order for providing equipments for generation of 3,000 MW. BHEL plans 'model production cluster' to end cartelisation

In order to break the cartelization of industrial consumables, the BHEL Small Scale Industries Development Service, now in its new avatar as Bidass, has embarked on a model cluster of networking. Bidass which has now 397 member units spread around Trichy region was formed as the first network cluster in the early 1980s and later incorporated as a Section 25 registered company under the Indian Companies Act, 1956. Started in 1984 with a membership of 13 units, Bidass has today grown to have 397 members as Trichy was fast becoming a hub of engineering activity for boiler industry in India. Many daring entrepreneurs had set up fabrication facilities and machine shops in and around Trichy, and a group of entrepreneurs had established their units to cater to the ancillary needs of BHEL and similar boiler manufacturing companies. more at : http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/madurai/BHEL-plans-model-production-cluster-to-end-cartelisation/articleshow/15066135.cms

BHEL to chug into Pakistan

In what could be a major boost to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL)’s railway business, the state-run power equipment firm is close to winning a contract worth Rs 1,000 crore from Pakistan to manufacture railway locomotives. This will be the company’s first deal in the neighbouring country and is happening at a time when both India and Pakistan have started opening channels of bilateral trade. “In recent government-to-government talks, the need for locomotives has been identified as one of the requirements for Pakistan and we have made an offer to supply locos,” said B Prasada Rao, chairman and managing director of Bhel. “Of late, we have started getting more locomotive orders. We have increased our capacity to produce locomotives at our Jhansi plant to 50 per year from 30. Probe scrapping of tender for power units: Somaiya

Alleging a scam of Rs 1,000 crore in the state's power sector, the Opposition on Saturday demanded an investigation into the cancellation of tender for setting up power units at Siratgarh and Chhabra. The tender was allotted to BHEL but according to BJP national secretary Kirit Somaiya, it was scrapped after a deliberate delay in issuing work order and without any reason. "No explanation has been given by the Ashok Gehlot government over why the tender was scrapped and what is the need for re-tendering,'' said Somaiya, while addressing the media at the state BJP headquarters. He alleged that the tender was scrapped by the government in order to benefit a private firm, who was the next bidder for the project. The difference between the tenders was of Rs 1,000 crore and the state government has deliberately delayed the work by raising various queries for BHEL, which is a renowned company. All to benefit a private firm,'' said Somiya. more at: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/jaipur/Probe-scrapping-of-tender-for-power-units-Somaiya/articleshow/14739493.cms

MRPL pushes BHEL to ready captive power plants quickly

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) , is waiting for a quick completion of its captive power plant. The commissioning of all the units under Phase III of its project hinges on the functioning of the power plant. P. P. Upadhya, the new Chairman and Managing Director, who took over from U.K.Basu on July 1, told The Hindu on Wednesday that MRPL had been 'pushing' Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to finish the plant soon. BHEL has undertaken the long-term turnkey job of building the power plant for MRPL, a subsidiary of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. “The BHEL power plant has to get into operation.” It (BHEL) had said that the power plant would be ready by July but that was doubtful, he said. The upcoming captive power plant will havea generating capacity of 110 MW, and will enable MRPL to commission its units instantly instead of in instalments. At present, five gas turbines generating 85 MW power and steam are being used for all operations. more at: http://www.thehindu.com/business/companies/article3606779.ece

Bhel offers to supply diesel locomotives to Pakistan

India’s state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) has offered to supply 100 diesel locomotives to Pakistan as part of a plan to modernize the country’s rail infrastructure. If the public sector unit clinches the deal, it will be the first such order for an Indian manufacturer. The proposed deal, valued at around Rs. 1,000 crore, comes against the backdrop of newfound bonhomie between the two countries. India-Pakistan ties have picked up since last year and there has been a marked improvement in economic cooperation. “China had earlier supplied around 1,000 locomotives to Pakistan, of which 800 have developed defects. Their railway network is down,” said a senior Bhel executive, requesting anonymity. “We made an independent offer of 100 locomotives to a Pakistani delegation which had come visiting recently. We are now working with their ministry of railways for the order to fructify. Once this happens, we may get more orders given the huge demand,” he said. more at: http://www.livemint.com/2012/06/29002351/Bhel-offers-to-supply-diesel-l.html

BHEL to recruit 11,000 people in 12th Plan

In the 11th Plan period, the public sector power equipment major, BHEL, recruited 7,266 people more than the number of employees who retired. However, in the 12th Plan period, manpower addition, net of retirement, is likely to be close to zero. The company told analysts recently that it would recruit 2,200 people a year during the 2012-17 period, but that would be only as many as the number of people who retire. “Given the current cost pressures and competition in the industry, BHEL intends to only replace retiring employees,” says a report of Edelweiss. BHEL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mr B P Rao, told analysts recently that the total number of employees would “more or less remain constant, because we have already done major recruitment in the past.” The company has about 48,000 employees. more at: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/article3569551.ece
