BHEL in talks with US company to make batteries for electric vehicles

Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete on Friday disclosed that public sector electric equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is in talks with a US-based company to form a joint venture in India to manufacture lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). Right now, we are importing 100 per cent of our lithium-ion battery requirements, but efforts are on towards manufacturing them in India within the next one year,'' Geete said. BHEL comes under the administrative control of ministry of heavy industries. Lithium-ion batteries, which are a key component used in electric vehicles, are mostly imported from China at present. Geete also said that the Department of Heavy Industries has recommended to the finance ministry that customs duty on parts of electric vehicles (EVs) should be reduced. Now, the finance ministry has to take a decision on it, he added. Senior officials in the heavy industries ministry earlier said that it has proposed reducing customs duty on EV parts, which are currently not exempted from the import tariff to the Department of Revenue. To boost production of EVs in the country, the ministry has also suggested defining semi-knocked-down and completely-knocked-down kits used for assembling such vehicles for streamlining of customs duty. ref: https://www.indiatoday.in/mail-today/story/bhel-talks-us-company-make-batteries-electric-vehicles-1415032-2018-12-22

BHEL complains to Rail Board on tender favouring select companies

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHELNSE 0.07 %) has written to the Railway Board saying a recent tender floated by the transporter for supply of propulsion systems favours select companies. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai has floated a tender for acquiring propulsion systems for 141 electric trains. BHEL, which has been regularly supplying locos and equipment to the railways, has complained that it is being kept out as the tender favours only three Indian companies. Another potential bidder from the private sector has sought more time. In a letter to Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani, BHEL has said this may lead to cost escalation. “BHEL is getting deprived of the opportunity for being considered for bulk quantity in view of change in eligibility criteria,” BHEL chairman Atul Sobti wrote in the letter. more at: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/railways/bhel-complains-to-rail-board-on-tender-favouring-select-companies/articleshow/66583415.cms

Bhel’s turnaround in order flows may be a flash in the pan

After dismal order flows of less than Rs2,000 crore each in the first two quarters of the current fiscal year, the country’s largest public sector power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel), sprung a pleasant surprise with order flows of about Rs12,000 crore in the December quarter. Even better, it matched analysts’ revenue and profit expectations. Although the stock rose by 1.6% on Thursday on favourable news and a positive mood on the Street, it may be too early to rejoice. After all order flows are lumpy in this sector and the third quarter accretion maybe a flash in the pan. On a cumulative basis, the nine-month order flow of Rs15,750 crore in fiscal year 2018 (FY18) is sharply lower when compared to the year-ago period. Therefore, Bhel would have to ramp-up orders in the fourth quarter to be able to sustain order flow growth and keep the order book at the current level of Rs1.02 trillion. All this fuss about order flows is justified given that the company has steadily seen revenue falling (see chart) due to poor orders coming in from the power sector, which accounts for about 80% of its revenue. Moreover, a year back, a significant portion of the company’s order book was slow-moving. more at: http://www.livemint.com/Money/Tr3LxlyHDPBY9ubhIW9LdK/Bhels-turnaround-in-order-flows-may-be-a-flash-in-the-pan.html

NHRC issues notice to Chairman of BHEL and Medical Superintendent of BHEL hospital in Haridwar for negligence

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to Chairman of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and the medical superintendent of BHEL hospital at Haridwar over reports that a patient was declared dead by doctors at a state-owned hospital and shifted into mortuary even as he was alive for the next eight hours. The Commission has asked BHEL to send a detailed report within six weeks along with action taken against the guilty doctors and relief provided to the family of the deceased. "Declaring a person dead, who is still alive and sending him to the mortuary is the worst example of the negligence committed by the doctors of a state-owned hospital. It is possible that by providing appropriate treatment in time, the life of the deceased could be saved. A precious human life has been lost. The inhuman act done by the doctors has violated the right to life and healthcare of the deceased," the NHRC said in a statement. A 44-year-old employee of BHEL was rushed to the BHEL hospital after he complained of chest pain and collapsed on January 12. He was declared dead by the doctors at 11.30 pm and his body was shifted to the mortuary. The next day, a postmortem was conducted on the body of the deceased, during which it was revealed that his death occurred about six hours before the postmortem i.e. around 8.00 am - a gap of more than 8 hours after the patient was declared dead. The brother of the deceased has lodged a complaint against the negligence committed by the doctors, leading to death of his brother. ref: https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/nhrc-issues-notice-to-chairman-of-bhel-and-medical-superintendent-of-bhel-hospital-in-haridwar-for-negligence/articleshow/62607330.cms

Railways is BHEL’s first stop in bid to get 40-50% revenue from non-power areas

Indian Railways' massive electrification plan may just be the opportunity Bharat Heavy Electricals — the manufacturer of boilers and turbine generators for the power sector — is looking for to make sure it gets 40 to 50 percent of its revenues in some years from now. The start hasn’t been bad. From getting small contracts for sewage treatment and lake cleaning, the company is now in contention for a big one — Railways’ first large electrification tender — this one being of 400 kms. The company aims to double the share of revenues from non-power sector to 40 percent by 2022. “Internally, the company wants to make it 50 percent but that would be very difficult. Forty percent by 2022 is what looks feasible and we are working towards that,” a senior official with the company told Moneycontrol. BHEL reported sales of Rs 5,607 crore in June quarter with share of non-power revenues at close to 23 percent. The railways’ 400-km track electrification tender is a prestigious one. It’s the first time in history the monolith is attempting to undertake such an exercise with just one tender, this being 10 to 11 times larger than what the national transporter has been doing all these decades. ref: http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/railways-is-bhels-first-stop-in-bid-to-get-40-50-revenue-from-non-power-areas-2486727.html
