Bhel chief 1st PSU head to get extension post retirement

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Monday decided to grant two years' post-retirement extension to BP Rao, chairman of state-run power gear-maker Bhel, a day before his superannuation. This is the first time ever that the head of a public sector undertaking (PSU) is being given an extension after retirement and changes the rules of succession in state entities by setting a precedent. Rao's case is bound to prompt ministers to use post-retirement extension as a carrot to get their way with chiefs of public sector entities under them. ref: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/Bhel-chief-1st-PSU-head-to-get-extension-post-retirement/articleshow/28159430.cms

BHEL employee, aides arrested for cheating unemployed youths

An employee of Bharath Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) located along Mysore Road and three aides have been arrested by the Byatarayanapura police for allegedly cheating hundreds of unemployed youths with the promise of a job in the public sector company. The accused — attender Chamaiah, 55, of BHEL Township and H S Naveen, 32, Santosh Singh, 29, and M B Shyam Sundar, 25, of Tumkur — were arrested after K Harsha, 28, of Nelagadaranahalli lodged a complaint on August 12. Harsha claimed his friend Kiran told him his brother Naveen, an assistant engineer at BHEL, could help him get placed in the company. Naveen took Rs 3 lakh and introduced Harsha to Chamaiah, who claimed to be a personal assistant to the BHEL general manager. Chamaiah called Harsha to BHEL on May 2, 2013. However, when he reached there, Chamaiah told him there was a bomb threat and that he should go back. Harsha tried to go to BHEL on two other occasions but was turned away on some pretext. He was later asked to pay Rs 20,000 more to get employment. Police investigation has revealed the accused similarly cheated over 100 people from Tumkur, Hubli, Hassan, Doddaballapur, Tiptur and Bangalore. Police seized fake job offers printed on BHEL letterheads from the accused, two of whom — Narendra Singh and Prithvi — are absconding. The arrests also helped the cops solve three cases of bomb hoax calls made to the BHEL factory. The police said Chamaiah claimed to have received phone calls of bomb threats at BHEL every time the people he cheated visited the factory with fake appointment letters provided by the accused. ref: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/bhel-employee-aides-arrested--for-cheating-unemployed-youths/1209347/

BHEL stake sale: Govt may take the crossholding route

Cash-rich PSUs such as Coal India, NMDC, SAIL, NTPC and ONGC may buy a stake in power equipment producer Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), a ‘Maharatna’ category Central public sector enterprise (CPSEs). The proposal was discussed at the high-level inter-ministerial meeting called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday. “This will help in two ways. First, the Government will get money. Second, it will not affect already subdued shares of BHEL on the stock exchanges,” a senior government official told Business Line. A sale of 5 per cent shares of BHEL to other PSUs at current market prices could fetch over Rs 1,300 crore. At the meeting, the Heavy Industries Ministry was asked to come out with viable options for BHEL. The options include buyback, dividend payment and disinvestment. However, the official added, considering the cash surplus position of BHEL, a buyback is not feasible. more at: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/bhel-stake-sale-govt-may-take-the-crossholding-route/article5422188.ece

The government looks set to give two years' post-retirement extension to BP head of the company's unit at Haridwar in Uttarakhand, as his successor after interviewing over 10 candidates in June. The heavy industries ministry had initially sent a set of proposals — giving a year's extension to BP Rao, or if it couldn't be done, then clear Chand's appointment . The ministry argued for Rao's extension, citing Chand's lack of board-level experience , even though he was eligible under government. Time to improve technology in coal-based industries: BHEL chief

The time has come to look for ways to improve technology in coal-based industries as India is having more than 70% coal-based power stations, a situation that would continue for at least the next 10 years, said A V Krishnan, the executive director of BHEL Trichy. Participating at the two-day conference on clean coal, carbon capture and storage technologies that has been organized by the Trichy Regional Engineering College Science Technology Entrepreneurs Park (TREC-STEP) in partnership with BHEL, Krishnan said that in a country like India where more and more coal-based power stations were bound to come up in the coming years, lessening the carbon-related emissions was of paramount importance. Krishnan said different technologies needed to be used for different coals. For instance, he said that BHEL was successfully using the newly-developed integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology that would greatly improve the efficiency level, that is to say a measure of how much heat energy embedded in coals was converted into electricity. Funded by the European Union, the project aims at disseminating the latest carbon capture and storage technologies among the Indian thermal power players as the anticipated growth in energy demand is expected to widen the usage of coal in energy sector in the coming years. To reduce the consumption of goal, and emissions (carbon, hydrogen, sulfur related), the IGCC would be one of the future technologies for green power generation, Krishnan said. In fact, BHEL has taken it up as a project and working hand in hand with TREC-STEP for the last three years, visited a number of power plants in the country to study what kind of technology was used at present, and what would be better-suited for the Indian conditions. more at: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/trichy/Time-to-improve-technology-in-coal-based-industries-BHEL-chief/articleshow/26759728.cms

BHEL ‘defers’ interviews, political pressure alleged

The Ramachandrapuram unit of the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has reportedly postponed the interviews for artisan posts scheduled for November 25, bowing to the pressure by political parties and agitators. Though the BHEL management has not confirmed the postponement, it admitted that some political leaders met them and requested for temporary deferment of the interviews. The BHEL invited applications for the recruitment of 800 artisans in different wings and a written test was held on November 10 on its premises. About 37,000 aspirants appeared for the test out of the total 40,000 applicants. Quota tangle However, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) and some of the Congress leaders demanded that 80 per cent of the recruitment be done through local exchanges, leaving the remaining 20 per cent in open category. TRS Deputy Floor Leader in the Assembly T. Harish Rao, Congress MLC and district Congress Committee (DCC) president V. Bhoopal Reddy, BJP former MLA K. Satyanarayana and corporator Pushpa Nagesh Yadav met the BHEL officials and submitted a representation, urging them deferment of the interviews and asked them to discuss the issue with their corporate office. The BHEL management said to have promised the leaders that it would take up the issue with the ministry concerned. Fair deal sought for locals Earlier in the day, TRS cadres led by Mr. Harish Rao, Mr. Bhoopal Reddy and Mr. Satyananarayana staged a dharna before the BHEL, alleging that the Union government had failed in providing jobs for those who had lost their land to the industry. They also demanded that Medak people get a lion’s share in the jobs as the industry is located here. ref: http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/andhra-pradesh/bhel-defers-interviews-political-pressure-alleged/article5360475.ece

Bhel’s Tiruchi vendors prepare to look beyond their only customer

A cluster of about 300 engineering units in Tiruchi, which for nearly four decades has almost entirely depended on Bharat Heavy Electricals LtdBSE 1.37 % for orders, is being forced by the problems facing its only customer to seek out new business opportunities for the first time. "All along, business was coming to our doorstep," said M Srinivasan, president of BhelBSE 1.37 % Small and Medium Industries Association, or Bhelsia, as this cluster of fabrication and machining shops is called. Not anymore. Bhel doesn't dominate the market for boilers and turbines as it once used to. The economic slowdown and the problems in the power sector haven't helped matters. Bhel's latest results, for Q2, in a pointer to its weak run. All its key metrics are down: order backlog by 16%, revenues 15% and profit after tax 64%. This has reflected in the fortunes of Tuvakudi, an area outside Tiruchi where Bhelsia is based out of. With the public sector company's order pipeline drying, Srinivasan said some of the smaller vendors have shut shop. Most others, he said, believe it may never get back to the good old days again. Three years ago, Bhel is said to have outsourced some 2.5 lakh tonnes of fabrication work to all its vendors, including those in Tiruchi. The projection given by Bhel then was that this would touch 7.5 lakh tonnes by 2015. Actually, the volumes have now fallen to 2 lakh tonnes. Bhel couldn't be reached for comments. more at: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/indl-goods/svs/engineering/bhels-tiruchi-vendors-prepare-to-look-beyond-their-only-customer/articleshow/25685191.cms

Ryots seek regular jobs in BHEL unit

Farmers, who had given their lands to the BHEL, stage a protest at Ranipet demanding employment in the organisation on Monday. Sources said the BHEL in 1974 acquired the lands of 124 farmers in the area for the construction of office buildings at its Ranipet unit. During that time, the BHEL administration reportedly entered into an agreement assuring to provide job to one member of every farmer’s family, who gave land to the Central public sector undertaking. Following this, 109 persons, out of the total 124, were absorbed for technical positions in the unit. For the remaining 15 persons, who were found to be under qualified (qualified less than class 8), the BHEL administration planned to provide non-technical job on contract basis. Not convinced with the PSU’s offer, the family members of the 15 persons resorted to protests in the past demanding the BHEL to provide a technical job with regular pay. On Monday, the family members launched a fast-unto-death protest near the entrance of the Ranipet unit. SIPCOT police arrived at the spot and dispersed them. Following this, the members withdrew their protest. ref: http://newindianexpress.com/states/tamil_nadu/Ryots-seek-regular-jobs-in-BHEL-unit/2013/11/12/article1885399.ece

BHEL in talks with for tie-up in CBFC boiler technology

France's Alstom and Switzerland-based Foster Wheeler AG are frontrunners for a possible partnership with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) in the circulating fluidised bed combustion (CFBC) boiler segment. This is a technology where the state-owned equipment firm is not considered as strong as competitors in the domestic market such as Thermax and ThyssenKrupp India. With distinct commercial advantages in the long run and its credentials as a clean carbon platform, CFBC boilers are expected to be increasingly used for power generation as well as for industrial applications in the future, with a projected domestic market potential of around 8,000 MW per annum. BHEL officials indicated that the company was in various stages of talks with both Alstom and Foster Wheeler for a partnership in the large CFBC boiler segment. Unlike in the case of coal that is powdered, pulverised and then burnt in a furnace, the CFBC boilers have the advantage of fuel flexibility. These boilers can also be operated with non-coal fuel options such as lignite, bagasse and straw. The advantage accruing from clean-coal platform will be by way of fuel flexibility to burn a variety of fuels — coal, lignite, coal washery rejects, biomass and waste materials — at a low combustion temperature. more at: http://www.indianexpress.com/news/bhel-in-talks-with-for-tieup-in-cbfc-boiler-technology/1193434/

BHEL's worries are not over yet

Even as Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL)’s recent share price movement (up 38 per cent since August-end) is reflecting the Street’s hope of a recovery, the company continues to give a disappointing performance. On Wednesday, BHEL reported a 64 per cent year-on-year fall in net profit for the September quarter, led by a 1,359-basis-point drop in operating margins to a mere 4.7 per cent. Lower execution and higher fixed cost, as well as component of low margin orders have hurt margins. Further, falling order book, losses in the industrial segment and the merged company, Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels, have concerned the Street as reflected in its share prices, which fell 1.3 per cent on Wednesday to Rs 140.45. "Against the backdrop of poor results, I do not think there is reason to buy shares at these prices. Also, considering the prevailing situation in the industry, there are no major positive triggers. BHEL can fall to Rs 115-125 levels, and then one can consider buying it," said Rabindra Nath Nayak of SBICAP Securities. September quarter sales fell 15.2 per cent year-on-year to Rs 8,819 crore due to slow moving orders in the overall order book and slow execution on account of delays from the client and extended payments cycles. While this was largely known and sales came along expectations, the biggest disappointment came from net profits, far below expectations of Rs 798 crore. more at: http://www.business-standard.com/article/markets/bhel-s-worries-are-not-over-yet-113110601017_1.html

With BHEL first-half orders down to a fifth of target, topline in trouble

After a sharp drop in its order book position in the last couple of years owing to delayed power projects, public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) was expecting a rebound this fiscal banking on an expected pick-up in the power sector, but that was not to be. The capital goods manufacturer has booked fresh orders worth just Rs 4,470 crore or 22.44% of the target of Rs 19,920 crore during the first six months of the current fiscal. This means that BHEL’s targeted order booking of Rs 54,714 crore (including non-power business) for FY14 would be missed by a wide margin and in all probability new orders this fiscal could be even less than last year’s Rs 31,650 crore. The company, which reported a halving of net profit to R465 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal on a 24% drop in net sales to Rs 6,353 crore, has internally kept its top-line target for this fiscal at Rs 47,000 crore, less than last year’s achievement of R50,156 crore and the Rs 49,510 crore clocked in FY12. This is an unprecedented move as over the years, BHEL has consistently posted an increase in turnover in absolute terms. more at: http://www.financialexpress.com/news/with-bhel-firsthalf-orders-down-to-a-fifth-of-target-topline-in-trouble/1190942

BHEL has made about 700 wheels for temple chariots in Tamil Nadu in over 45 years

For long now, energy utilities have been customers of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) for its boilers and turbines. And Tamil Nadu has been no exception. But here's an unlikely association — a very old one but unknown to many — between BHELBSE 1.77 % and the Tamil Nadu department that oversees nearly 40,000 temples: BHEL makes special steel wheels for temple chariots or cars in Tamil Nadu, an order book that's only becoming fatter every year. By the end of December, some 60 wheels will be delivered by BHEL to various temples in the state. Till date, in an association dating back nearly four-and-a-half decades, BHEL has made about 700 wheels for temple chariots in Tamil Nadu, over 300 of these in the last five years alone. "We are replacing wooden car wheels with steel wheels," says P Dhanapal, commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, in charge of the management of Hindu temples in the state. ref: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/et-cetera/bhel-has-made-about-700-wheels-for-temple-chariots-in-tamil-nadu-in-over-45-years/articleshow/25079898.cms

Coal crisis hits BHEL supplier SMEs

Small and micro enterprises in the State supplying equipment to public sector power giant Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited are struggling to survive as most of the power projects have been put on hold due to coal crisis, according to additional industrial advisor, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises S Sivagnanam said. Speaking to Express on the sidelines of Cluster Level Intellectual Property Awareness Programme organised by Confederation of Indian Industry here on Wednesday, Sivagnanam said BHEL ancillaries in Ranipet and Tiruchy had been hit as business orders were not coming from BHEL. A BHEL senior official confirmed that BHEL itself was not getting orders for the equipment from its customers including the state electricity corporations as most of the power projects across India has been put on hold due to the coal crisis. “Many of these ancillaries are not in demand as our customers have put on hold many power projects due to coal crisis,” he said. This has affected BHEL and it is believed that the public sector unit has been ordered to diversify its business for making locomotives and treatment plants. more at: http://newindianexpress.com/cities/chennai/Coal-crisis-hits-BHEL-supplier-SMEs/2013/10/17/article1839932.ece

Expect BHEL to get 6k MW orders in FY14: Anand Rathi

Just because BHEL is suffering from a severe drop in capex in the investment cycle, it is not the end of business or end of the road for this company, says Amol Rao of Anand Rathi. The company will not be able to perform up to its historical highs, but it may garner orders of around 6000 megawatts for FY14, he says. "The pessimism is overdone and at some point in time your valuations deserve a look," he adds. He believes it'll take another 5-6 months for order bookings to resume, which would then lead to an improvement in the rating of the stock. Today, the requirement of state and central electricity boards is 7,000-8,000 MW, which can be serviced only by two or three players with such large operating capacity, Rao says. Going forward, these are going to have environmental clearances and coal availability in place, with financial closure, he says. These projects are primarily central and state backed, he adds. more at: http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/expect-bhel-to-get-6k-mw-ordersfy14-anand-rathi_951901.html

BHEL blamed for long outages

A cornered UP power corporation is now blaming the central government for the UP-NCR entering the dark ages. The corporation claims that it is facing a shortage of 800MW as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has not completed repair and maintenance work at the Obra power station, entrusted to it almost eight years ago. UPPCL has asked the Union power ministry to intervene and ensure completion of pending work on a priority. Senior officials said the issue was conveyed to the Centre during the one-day conference of power ministers of all states and UTs on September 10. Scheduled outages are currently in place across the state due to non-availability of adequate power, said officials. At least four scheduled outages have been imposed in the last 48 hours in Noida alone. These cuts have stretched for over several hours irrespective of the scheduled timings and are in addition to the four-hour cuts imposed at night in industrial sectors. With similar outages reported from Ghaziabad, lives of residents have been pushed into complete disarray. Corporation officials said that UPPCL had given maintenance work on five units of 200MW capacity each at the Obra 'B' power plant to BHEL in 2006. Though the work was to be completed by 2009, the PSU is yet to finish the job. "A number of meetings were held to resolve this issue, but work progress has not been satisfactory. On completion, we can enhance our capacity to ensure sufficient supply to several regions in the state," said a senior UPPCL official. ref: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/noida/BHEL-blamed-for-long-outages/articleshow/22564028.cms

TELK considers tech partnership with BHEL

Transformers and Electricals Kerala Limited (TELK), the transformer manufacturing unit at Angamaly, is looking towards building a technology partnership with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), the public sector unit which is also engaged in production activities of a similar nature. TELK has a collaboration with NTPC Limited, the principal power generation company belonging to the central public sector, now. There were reports that NTPC might review its association with TELK. Professional services firm Deloitte had conducted a study on NTPC and the agency is understood to have recommended such a course of action as transformer manufacturing is not in the NTPC’s domain of activity. In response to a query by The Hindu, Deloitte expressed its inability to divulge the details of the report. TELK has been highly interested in a tie-up with BHEL, said V.D.Satheesan, MLA, and trade union activist associated with the Angamaly-based company. Such a partnership is expected to help TELK to get the required technical know-how for improving its production and marketing capabilities. “Efforts are on to convene a meeting of top officials of the concerned central public sector units in New Delhi,” he said. more at : http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Kochi/telk-considers-tech-partnership-with-bhel/article5107782.ece?homepage=true

Bhel Project delay irks Assam Power Corp

State-owned Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGCL) has served a pre-termination notice to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) for delay in the implementation of a 100-MW Namrup replacement power project. "APGCL is taking action for recovery of liquidated damage from BhelBSE -10.70 % as per the contract," Assam Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi told ET. 'Make BHEL nodal agency for govt's overseas power projects'

Amid state-run BHEL grappling with tough business environment, Heavy Industries Ministry will pitch for making the powergear maker the nodal agency for executing all overseas power projects that are financed by the Indian government. Besides, the parent Ministry would make efforts for according preference to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) in providing spares and services for government-funded foreign power projects. BHEL, the country's leading power equipment maker, is going through tough times, primarily due to sluggishness in the sector and cheaper overseas imports hurting its prospects. The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises has assured BHEL of various possible assistance from the government side. more at: http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/make-bhel-nodal-agency-for-govt-funded-overseas-power-projs-113081100200_1.html

BHEL's ancillary units face closureAncillary units under the treat of closing down

Most of the 500-odd factories that have been supplying materials to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) under earlier outsourcing system (OS) for almost three decades have demanded to revive the old system and scrap the new away centre fabrication (ACF) that was introduced more than a year ago. Under OS, raw materials used to be supplied by the parent BHEL and the work was in continuous flow. After the ACF was introduced, more than 80% of these ancillary product manufacturers closed shop in phases, because they could not get the raw materials, which were now their responsibility. "It is very difficult to procure steel and other items from northern India and we are not able to invest money in the first place," stated an Indian Legal Rights Protection Helpline letter that was addressed to the district collector Jayashree Muralidharan, on Monday. more at: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/madurai/BHELs-ancillary-units-face-closureAncillary-units-under-the-treat-of-closing-down/articleshow/21791726.cms

Chinese firms steal a march over Bhel for overseas orders

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) isn’t just struggling with orders drying up in India, it’s losing out to competition in overseas markets as well, especially in Africa and to Chinese power generation equipment manufacturers such as Dongfang Electric Corp. and Shanghai Electric Power Co. Ltd offering friendlier financing. In the domestic market, the Indian government’s move last year to increase the import duty on power generation equipment to 21% from 5% earlier to thwart competition from Chinese manufacturers hasn’t helped much. “In the overseas markets, everyone is asking for financing. The Chinese are doing it in a big way. But the Indian government is not keen to fund big projects. They are funding small projects,” said a Bhel executive, requesting anonymity. Bhel is looking abroad for contracts over fears its domestic market share may decline given the hurdles faced by domestic power projects. The company’s orders dropped to Rs.31,528 crore in the year ended March from Rs.60,507 crore in 2010-11, although it’s an improvement over Rs.22,096 crore in 2011-12. more at: http://www.livemint.com/Companies/HzKwmNsU1E9YNaGUoeLo9L/Chinese-firms-steal-a-march-over-Bhel-for-overseas-orders.html

When Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) announced its annual results for 2012-13 on May 23, Chairman B Prasad Rao surprised the audience by claiming fresh order inflows had jumped 43 per cent to Rs 31,528 crore. Less than three months since, that bubble of positivity and assured growth has burst. Fresh orders dipped 80 per cent to Rs 1,500 crore in the first quarter ended June. Bhel cuts power equipment prices to fight slump

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel), India’s largest maker of power equipment, cut prices by at least 15% in the past year to stem a slide in orders that threatens to send profit lower for a second straight year. “Electricity producers are scaling back investment because of a shortage of fuel, hurting manufacturers of equipment such as boilers, turbines and generators,” said P.K. Bajpai, finance director at the state-owned company. “Pending projects aren’t yielding orders as Asia’s third-largest economy expands at the slowest pace in a decade, according to Bajpai.” “We are trying to bid as aggressively as possible, but there’s overcapacity in the market,” Bajpai said in an interview. “We’ve corrected our prices in line with the market. BHEL order book to improve, but not its stock: AnandRathi

Downturn hits BHEL vendors

Around the same time last year, ancillary units of BHEL were struggling to meet deadline for delivering output because of power scarcity. A number of units among the over 400 ancillary industries had to depend on diesel generators to keep the operations running even if it meant a substantial rise in input costs. Now, the power availability does not mean much to the industries owing to depleted orders, the industries are facing capacity under-utilisation. Around 60 units have already been on the brink of closure. Nearly 150 industries that were started in the last couple of years and those among established ones that had ramped up capacity in anticipation of higher orders are the most affected. Repayment of bank loans has hit them hard, according to Rajappa Rajkumar, Vice-President, Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association. Around 2,000 industrial workers had been rendered jobless, and the trend of workers shifting base to other parts of the State was perceptible, he said. more at: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Tiruchirapalli/downturn-hits-bhel-vendors/article4901282.ece

BHEL, battling falling margins & orders, hopes worst is over

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) is feeling the pinch of being the largest power equipment maker in the country. With a crippling slowdown facing the sector, its order book has dried by half and its investors have given it a thumbs down, with share prices at a seven-year low. Slowdown in demand, a lower order book and implementation issues due to payment delays by customers, deteriorating working capital, depleting cash in the books and falling operating profit margins are dragging the company down - signifying the ills now gripping the capital goods sector. "A host of infrastructural bottlenecks related to power shortages, mining ban in many states and delays in commissioning of large projects are key headwinds for recovery in industrial production. We are currently operating in a difficult business environment," said B Prasada Rao, chairman and managing director, in a recent investor conference call. Power, which contributes almost 80 per cent of BHEL's revenue, has been the biggest worry. The company used to win about Rs 60,000 crore of orders in a year. This has come down to Rs 25,000-30,000 crore. Once an order is booked, it takes two to three years for BHEL to make the equipment, making it important to keep the project pipeline moving. To combat this, the company is looking for other opportunities, particularly from the state and central utilities, which continue to invest in new projects as compared to private sector power companies. more at: http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/bhel-battling-falling-margins-orders-hopes-worst-is-over-113062800027_1.html

BHEL looking to build thermal power units in Buryatia

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), an Indian integrated power plant equipment manufacturer, is looking to build two thermal power plant units in the Russian internal republic of Buryatia, the Regnum news agency said. Executives from BHEL recently met representatives of the Buryatia government to negotiate over the Indian company’s participation in building the reactors of the Ulan-Ude TETs-2 thermal power plant. The first phase of the project involves the construction of two power units with a capacity of 240 MW each. The Buryatia government expressed interest in BHEL’s proposal to raise finances for the project using mechanisms under the trade and economic cooperation agreement between the governments of Russia and India. Buryatia considers the project strategically important to meet the republic’s energy needs. The construction and commissioning of the Ulan-Ude TETs-2 will create the conditions for quality heat supply to the capital. The project would also help secure power supplies to industrial consumers, including companies implementing large-scale projects in the field of extraction and processing of natural resources. The republic will also depend on the project to supply electricity to consumers in its northern regions: Khorinsky, Yeravninsky and Bauntovsky Evenkiysky. ref: http://indrus.in/economics/2013/06/13/bhel_looking_to_build_thermal_power_units_in_buryatia_26095.html

Rift in Public Enterprises Selection Board over Bhel chief's interview list

Differences have cropped up in Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) over the list of 15 candidates who are to be interviewed on June 20 for the post of Bhel chairman, with one of the three board members giving dissent note against inclusion of an IAS officer. Government sources said former Bharat Electronics Ltd chairman Ashwani Kumar Datt, who represents public sector undertakings (PSUs) in the PESB, has opposed the inclusion of Shishir Priyadarshi's name in the interview list to select B P Rao's successor, who retires next January. Priyadarshi is a 1980-batch UP cadre IAS officer and the only bureaucrat to have applied for the top job at India's flagship power equipment and locomotives maker. The sources said Priyadarshi had last year applied for the top job at Coal India Ltd but was not called for interview. The sources said his inclusion in the interview list has been opposed on the ground that his name figured in a list of nine IAS officers, given in response to an RTI query in July 2012, against whom the Department of Personnel and Training was considering enforcing "deemed resignation" for allegedly "unauthorized absence". more at: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/Rift-in-Public-Enterprises-Selection-Board-over-Bhel-chiefs-interview-list/articleshow/20487370.cms

15 line up for BHEL CMD post

More than a dozen candidates, including senior IAS officer Shishir Priyadarshi are in race for the top job at India's biggest power-equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals LtdBSE -1.25 % (BHEL). Government head-hunters, the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) has called 15 candidates for interviews on June 20 to select Chairman and Managing Director of BHEL, sources said. Priyadarshi, a 1980 batch UP cadre IAS officer, is the only bureaucrat to have applied for the top job at BHEL. Others in fray include BHELBSE -1.25 % Executive Directors N Ravi Chander, Anuj Bhatnagar, Prakash Chand and Akshil Joshi. Security Printing & Minting Corp of India Ltd (SPMCIL) Chairman M S Rana, Heavy Engineering Corp Ltd (HECL) Director (Production) Kushal Saha, Container Corp of India (CONCOR) Director (Project & Services) Harpreet Singh, Coal India LtdBSE -1.08 % Director R Mohan Das, NHPC Director (Projects) J K Sharma, PGCL Director (Project) I S Jha, SJVNL Director (Civil) R N Misra and PDIL CMD M R Kanth are among other in race. PESB is to select a replacement for B Prasada Rao who retires in January next year on attaining superannuation age. Sources said Priyadarshi had last year applied for top job at Coal India Ltd (CIL) but was not called for interview. He has, however, made it to the grades in case of BHEL. He had served at WTO in Geneva for eight years, first during 1997-2000, and then between 2002 and 2007. In 2001-02, he was with UNDP. From September 2008, the official records say "posting awaited" against his present posting. Interestingly, last year his name figured in a list of 9 IAS officers against whom the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) was considering enforcing "deemed resignation" for allegedly "unauthorised absence". After returning from foreign deputation on September 1, 2008, he had applied for leave which was not sanctioned. ref: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/jobs/15-line-up-for-bhel-cmd-post/articleshow/20478274.cms

Dues to BHEL cross Rs 40k cr as cash crunch hits India Inc

Across India Inc, a cash crunch is hurting companies. Receivables at India’s biggest Indian electrical equipment maker BHEL have piled up to as much as Rs 40,000 crore at the end of 2012-13, up from R16,000 crore five years ago. The delayed payments at the company, which reported revenues of R50,015 crore crore last year, have resulted in negative cash flows. Indeed, it’s been a difficult year for India’s $25-billion electrical equipment manufacturing industry. Not only has industry-wide production shrunk 8% in fiscal 2013, the first decline in a decade, cash flows across the sector have been squeezed as cash-strapped power producers scale back orders and defer payments. ref: http://www.financialexpress.com/news/dues-to-bhel-cross-rs-40k-cr-as-cash-crunch-hits-india-inc/1125634

BHEL: Desperate bid to preserve cash

At a time when the Finance Minister has tried to allay investor concerns about the state of the economy and criticised rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) for not improving India’s rating, the reality presents a completely different picture with a series of project cancellations by India Inc. For instance, Reliance Infrastructure is in the process of cancelling mega projects worth Rs 20,000 crore on account of inordinate delays by government agencies. Public sector behemoth, BHEL, is exiting its four joint venture (JV) projects with state utilities on account of delays and cash crunch. On the other hand, nearly 15,000 megawatt (MW) of gas-based power projects worth over Rs 75,000 crore are idling due to non-supply of natural gas from Reliance’s KG basin, reports suggest. A peculiar case While all the above cases, which have been reported, point out to a systemic failure, BHEL’s case is peculiar and probably brings out the worst display of planning by the government. One of the reasons cited by BHEL for walking out of the project is a decline in cash balance, though the main reason cited is lack of progress in these projects. Lack of progress on account of state electricity board (SEB) is a known fact and has been on account of various reasons ranging from poor financial health of the boards to delay in land acquisition and environmental clearances to fuel linkages. However, decline in cash balance is a new one in the long list of excuses and deserves a closer look. This comes at a time when the company has posted a record turnover of Rs 50,015 crore and a net profit of Rs 6,485 crore. Finances Despite this, nearly Rs 40,000 crore is still due to the company from power generating firms. Though the profits might look sizeable, BHEL has a negative cash flow on account of its receivables. In other words, its cash inflows are lower than cash outflows despite making profits. more at: http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/bhel-desperate-bid-to-preserve-cash-113052100626_1.html

BHEL Tiruchi derives logistics advantage from Karaikal Port

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchi, has been able to save substantially on freight and wharf charges by exporting equipment through the Karaikal Port, which became operational in 2009. The port is closer at a distance of 132 km compared to the Chennai Port, 350 km away. BHEL determined the capability of the new-generation green field port to handle sensitive cargo, before starting exports. A private port run by Karaikal Port Private Limited (KPPL), it first despatched BHEL’s shipment of boiler components for two 135-MW Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustion boilers to New Caledonia, a French colony near Australia, during January 2010. BHEL despatched 14,000 tonnes of components for each of the two boilers to New Caledonia. In the process, the KPPL gained the distinction of being the only private-run port to export cargo belonging to public sector undertakings. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has also been exporting wheat through the port. more at: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Tiruchirapalli/bhel-tiruchi-derives-logistics-advantage-from-karaikal-port/article4688883.ece

'Govt taking steps to protect BHEL from Chinese competition'

The government today said it is taking steps to protect the interest of power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd in the wake of competition from Chinese players. A slew of factors including aggressive competition, weak investment sentiment, inflationary pressure and political turmoil in overseas countries like Syria have impacted the performance of state-run BHEL, Parliament was informed. In response to a query on whether the government is taking any steps to protect the interest and efficacy of BHEL from Chinese competition, Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Praful Patel replied in the affirmative. However, he did not provide details about steps initiated in this regard. Patel said that a number of Chinese companies such as Dongfang, Harbin Power and Shanghai Electric are competing with BHEL. "Out of 54,964 MW power generating capacity added during the 11th Five-Year Plan, equipment from Chinese suppliers/manufacturers accounted for nearly 18,500 MW (i.E. 34%," he said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. more at: http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/govt-taking-steps-to-protect-bhel-from-chinese-competition-113050200790_1.html

Bhel seeks direct disbursement of loans to complete stalled projects

To recover the Rs.20,000 crore owed by its customers, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) is trying to directly secure the disbursement of loans sanctioned to developers by lenders such as Rural Electrification Corp. Ltd (REC) for completing the stalled projects. While in the earlier arrangement, payment to Bhel was routed through the developers, a direct disbursement would also help the lenders to realize the stuck loans. “We are trying for direct payments from the lenders. This will be a win-win for both us and the lenders as they have loaned out money for these projects,” a Bhel executive said, requesting anonymity. more at: http://www.livemint.com/Companies/fEFvOC9HyKf2VXEFaIzQVN/Bhel-seeks-direct-disbursement-of-loans-to-complete-stalled.html

BHEL has the first-mover advantage if growth recovers this year

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has been facing headwinds for many quarters as the country's power sector undergoes a crisis of sorts. However, the state-run company has made huge investment in capacity expansion to keep itself ready for any revival in the economy. In the last five years, BHEL has invested Rs 6,660 crore in building new factories and expanding existing units. The manufacturing capacity has increased to 20,000 Megawatts (Mw) per annum, highest among all power-equipment vendors in India. In comparison, its main competitor, Larsen and Toubro invested around Rs 1,000 crore in expanding its machinery and industrial products division during the period. BHEL's other two competitors in the power equipment sector, Siemens and ABB, spent around Rs 1,000 crore each on expanding their manufacturing footprint during the period. This puts the company in a favourable position to meet the demand once growth recovers and even grab market share from competitors. During the boom period, from 2005-06 to 2010-11, the company was short on capacity opening opportunity for its competitors. BHEL's market share in new orders declined to 41 per cent during the 12th Plan period from 49 per cent in the previous one. The gainers were Chinese vendors, which grabbed a third of the new orders during the 12th Plan against 22 per cent in the previous period. more at: http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/bhel-has-the-first-mover-advantage-if-growth-recovers-this-year-113042900007_1.html
