BHEL employee, aides arrested for cheating unemployed youths

An employee of Bharath Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) located along Mysore Road and three aides have been arrested by the Byatarayanapura police for allegedly cheating hundreds of unemployed youths with the promise of a job in the public sector company. The accused — attender Chamaiah, 55, of BHEL Township and H S Naveen, 32, Santosh Singh, 29, and M B Shyam Sundar, 25, of Tumkur — were arrested after K Harsha, 28, of Nelagadaranahalli lodged a complaint on August 12. Harsha claimed his friend Kiran told him his brother Naveen, an assistant engineer at BHEL, could help him get placed in the company. Naveen took Rs 3 lakh and introduced Harsha to Chamaiah, who claimed to be a personal assistant to the BHEL general manager. Chamaiah called Harsha to BHEL on May 2, 2013. However, when he reached there, Chamaiah told him there was a bomb threat and that he should go back. Harsha tried to go to BHEL on two other occasions but was turned away on some pretext. He was later asked to pay Rs 20,000 more to get employment. Police investigation has revealed the accused similarly cheated over 100 people from Tumkur, Hubli, Hassan, Doddaballapur, Tiptur and Bangalore. Police seized fake job offers printed on BHEL letterheads from the accused, two of whom — Narendra Singh and Prithvi — are absconding. The arrests also helped the cops solve three cases of bomb hoax calls made to the BHEL factory.
