BHEL signs pact with US co to make drilling rigs

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Hyderabad, has concluded an MoU with National Oil Well Varco (NOV) of the US to build AC deep land drilling rigs.

The agreement envisages building 35 rigs with AC technology, in a phased manner. It covers 2,000 HP (NYSE:HPQ) AC draw works - AC technology rigs are known to be fuel-efficient with less maintenance cost and have precise control parameters.

BHEL has, so far, manufactured and supplied 84 land drilling rigs with DC-DC technology initially and later with AC-SCR technology for Oil India Ltd and other companies. For these rigs, it had collaborated with US-based Oilwell , which is now part of NOV - the agreement with this company was concluded in 1974 for a 10-year period, which was subsequently extended for another eight years.
