NTPC-BHEL project site in AP might face row over christening

The proposal to upgrade the existing Tirupati domestic airport at Renigunta to an International Airport in view of the heavy influx of pilgrims was mooted two years ago. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry proposed to extend the existing runway by 984 meters and build a new integrated terminal building with modular facilities. The Airports Authority of India has agreed to bear the capital expenditure of Rs 300 crore for the Tirupati International Airport project while the state government is providing 718 acres of land. So far about 300 acres of land at Renigunta has been handed over to the AAI, a district revenue official said.
