BHEL to build 750 MW gas plant in Delhi

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) is to build the Pragati II 750 MW gas fired power project in west Delhi at a cost of 16bn rupees ($260m).

Giving approval to the project, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said: "The plant will supply uninterrupted power to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport, Dwarka and nearby localities and is integral to our plan of making the capital a power surplus state".

At present, Delhi generates less than one-third of its total power requirement. The Cabinet has also recommended to the Empowered Group of Ministers that 3.5m standard cubic metres per day of gas be allocated to the project
