BHEL to set up 5 MW solar power plant

The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, is setting up a grid connected 5 MW solar power plant on its campus and hopes to achieve considerable savings on its power bill. S.Gopinath, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, inaugurated the construction activities after a bhoomi pooja was performed at a function held at the site near the High Pressure Boiler Plant (Unit II). The solar panels will be spread over an area of 25 acres. The Rs. 30.76 crore project is to be completed within six months and is expected to save BHEL about Rs 5.15 crores every year in energy bills by generating approximately 7.5 million units of electricity per annum, a BHEL press release said. While BHEL’s Electronic Division at Bengaluru will manufacture, supply, erect and commission the 20,016 solar photo voltaic panels and allied electrical equipment for the plant, the associated civil works will be done by BHEL, Tiruchi. A similar plant has been commissioned at BHEL’s Boiler Auxilliaries Plant at Ranipet.
