BHEL makes country’s first phase-shifting transformer

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Ranipur, in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand has indigenously made the country’s first phase shifting transformer. This transformer has been recently commissioned for the Telangana-based Kothagudam Thermal Power Station in Andhra Pradesh. As per BHEL official P Maniktala, BHEL had created twin 400 KV and 220 KV phase shifting transformer by which electricity flow in power lines of 400 KV and 220 KV, respectively, can be controlled as per requirements. In case 220 KV power line gets overloaded, via this transformer through 400 KV line the power supply can be easily resumed. “This is a major achievement and step by BHEL in acquiring smart grid capabilities. More business avenues have been opened through this achievement and we hope power quality improvement is also achieved through this indigenous technique capability,” said Maniktala. Notably, BHEL is the country’s largest manufacturer of transformers with more than 4000 transformers of 3 lakh MW capacity built by the public sector major undertaking in recent years. National Thermal Power Corporation, Power Grid Corporation, State Electrical Boards along with global orders from 20 countries are being catered to by BHEL,a Maha Ratna accorded public sector company. ref: http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/business/bhel-makes-country-s-first-phase-shifting-transformer/14343.html
