Panel visits BHEL to check pollution

The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board is ready for the visit of the Parliamentary standing committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests led by Dr T. Subbarami Reddy.

The Board is quite relieved that the officials are not being taken to task, in fact, it is now pinning their hopes on small and medium enterprises availing of the incentives offered by the Committee to relocate to areas beyond the Outer Ring Road in an effort to reduce pollution.

Meanwhile, the Committee that visited the Dr Reddy’s Laboratories on Thursday turned its guns on the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited on Friday. The officials said that the visit was routine to check the working of BHEL and ensure that they were following pollution prevention norms.

The Committee was reportedly approached by various shopkeepers from the historic Sultan Bazaar, who feared displacement by the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. The shopkeepers were assured by the Committee that they would be suitably relocated in a shopping complex at an ideal location.

Regarding the pollution levels in the Hussainsagar, the Board informed the Committee that the prestigious Rs 350 crore project for cleaning up the lake and its preservation will be executed by Japan in a year.
