BHEL gets NPCIL order

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved a significant breakthrough in the nuclear power segment with the first-ever order for the supply of steam generators for new rating 700 MWe nuclear sets.

An official spokesman said here that the order had been placed on BHEL by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for the Kakrapara Atomic Power Project (KAPP) in Gujarat against stiff international competition.

For the first time in India, NPCIL is installing two units of 700 MWe rating at KAPP, the highest rating developed indigenously, based on pressurised heavy water reactors.

GE Hitachi inks nuclear deal with NPCIL, BHEL

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) announced today the signing of two separate agreements with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) as the companies prepare to collaborate on building multiple GEH-designed nuclear reactors to help meet India’s energy production goals.

Mumbai-based NPCIL is India’s only nuclear utility operating 17 reactors and New Delhi-based BHEL is one of India's leading manufacturer and supplier of power generation equipment and components.

The two government-owned companies are helping lead India’s efforts to expand electricity generation from nuclear energy in the world’s largest democracy more than tenfold over the next two decades, from 4.1 Giga Watts (GW) today to 60 GW by 2032.

Under the preliminary agreements, GEH will begin planning with NPCIL and BHEL for the necessary resources in manufacturing and construction management for a potential multiple-unit Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) nuclear power station. The 1,350-MW ABWR technology is the world’s only commercially proven Generation III reactor design, with the first two of four units entering service in 1996 and 1997 and four additional units under construction today.

"These agreements will extend our existing footprint in nuclear energy in India,” said Kishore Jayaraman, chief executive officer, GE Energy India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were signed after GEH executives recently led a US nuclear industry trade delegation to India to explore potential opportunities to partner with local companies on future nuclear plant projects.

The new agreements lay the foundation for cooperation between GEH and the two Indian companies as additional steps are taken by the Indian and the US governments to implement the agreement on civilian nuclear cooperation they signed in October 2008. These efforts, including adopting a civil liability law and other regulations, continue to progress. India and the International Atomic Energy Agency signed a nuclear safeguards agreement last month in Vienna, representing a critical milestone and sign of further progress towards full implementation of the agreement between the US and Indian governments.

12th Plan order flows to be strong in FY10: BHEL

Q&A: K Ravi Kumar, Chairman & MD, BHEL
Jitendra Kumar Gupta / New Delhi March 23, 2009, 0:40 IST

A dominant player in the power equipment business, Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has been a major beneficiary of the growing investments in the power sector, which is clearly reflecting in its huge order book. However, off late, there have been concerns building up with regards the slowdown in new order inflow and rising competition.

Also, margins have come down in the third quarter, on account of higher raw material prices and wage provisions, which are seen impacting earnings in 2008-09. In light of these events, Jitendra Kumar Gupta spoke to K Ravi Kumar, chairman and managing director, BHEL about his views on the same and the company’s future strategy.

Will the planned capacity addition of 78,000 mw for the 11th plan be achieved?
As per the planning commission report it will be about 60,000 mw and, as far as our orders are concerned we have about 40,000 mw.

What is the current order book and the average execution time? And, what sales growth is expected over the next two years?
Our current order book is Rs 1,25,000 crore with average execution cycle of 36 months.

In 2008-09, we are expecting sales growth of 25-30 per cent.

Out of the total orders, power accounts for about 80 per cent and, rest comes from the industrial sector where we want to enter into private sector transmission and transportation business in a big way. Going forward, the share of industrial sector will rise to 30 per cent. So far, demand has been good but, next year we will have to wait and see.

750 to get jobs in BHEL unit at Thirumayam

Industrialisation of the backward district of Pudukottai has got a thrust with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) commencing its Rs.250-crore project for setting up a new manufacturing unit at Olaikudipatti village in Thirumayam Block.

The proposed plant with a production capacity of 25,000 metric tonnes per annum is expected to provide direct employment to 750 persons and indirect employment to 3,000. Economiser coils, re-heater coils, super-heater coils, low temperature super heater coils, and loose tubes for boilers of different capacities will be manufactured at the new unit to foster BHEL’s capacity augmentation programme – to attain 15,000 MW by 2009 and 20,000 MW by 2011.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram, after laying the foundation stone for the project on Sunday, said that the country’s growth could be expedited only through employment generation.

Thanking Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathy for bringing the project to fruition, Mr. Chidambaram sought the cooperation of the people and the State Government for making available land for industrialisation.

Mr. Chidambaram was hopeful that over the next few decades, the new BHEL plant would spawn the growth of Olaikudipatti village akin to Tiruverambur in Tiruchi district.

Chairman and Managing Director of BHEL K. Ravi Kumar said the new unit was necessary for enhancing competitiveness through lessening time cycle of product delivery. The BHEL was in the process of fulfilling its part in meeting the requirements of 11th and 12th Five-Year Plan periods. Executive Director of BHEL, Tiruchi V. Ananthakrishnan and Collector Rita Harish Thakkar also spoke.
