Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, has won five national safety awards from the Centre for 2013. The Energy Systems Group (ESG) Complex of BHEL, Tiruchi, has won two national safety awards for the longest accident-free period and for the lowest average frequency rate among factories which operated for 0.1 to 0.25 million man-hours during the year. BHEL commissions 250 MW unit at Sikka thermal power plant

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd today said it has commissioned a 250 MW coal-based thermal power unit at Sikka in Gujarat. It has been commissioned at Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd's (GSECL) Sikka Thermal Power Station on Engineering, procurement and Construction basis. BHEL to foray into defence manufacturing sector

BHEL is stepping up its foray into the defence manufacturing sector, which has been thrown open as part of the 'Make in India' campaign and is looking for hi-tech original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for partnership. "The 'Make in India' initiative in the defence sector is opening up large opportunities in naval, field guns and submarine segments and BHEL is actively pursuing these opportunities by partnering with global OEMs," BHEL chairman and managing director B. Prasada Rao said at the 51st annual general meeting held here. Over the years, the company has made significant contributions to naval guns and Integrated Platform Management System. Briefing shareholders over the overall performance of the company, Rao said that in spite of 2014-15 being an extremely challenging financial year, BHEL secured orders worth Rs 30,814 crore, an increase of 10 per cent over the previous year, in intensely competitive domestic and overseas markets. Despite severe market shrinkage and stiff competition in the power sector, BHEL maintained its leadership position with a market share of 72 per cent for the second consecutive year. By expanding its offerings, the company secured 89 per cent of its total orders in the power sector on engineering, procurement and construction basis. Six BHEL officials get jail in graft case

A Delhi court has ordered six officials of the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and a contractor to be jailed for making an excess payment of Rs. 2,85,866 in a fraudulent manner to the contractor for transporting and fixing ceiling fans at a dispensary in Noida in 1990. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had charge-sheeted nine BHEL officials. However, two of them were discharged at the time of the framing of charges in 2005, while one died during the trial. Special Judge Jitendra Kumar Mishra at the Karkardooma district courts convicted and sentenced the accused not only for indulging in corrupt practices but also for cheating, forgery, using forged documents as genuine and criminal conspiracy. The charge sheet alleged that for fixing 242 fans at the BHEL’s dispensary, the public sector company officials dishonestly and fraudulently paid an excess amount of Rs. 28,58,66.78. “The case of the prosecution stands proved beyond any reasonable doubt. Nothing could be pointed out by the defence regarding doubt towards the case of the prosecution,’’ the Judge said, holding them guilty of the offences under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court sentenced Deputy General Manager V. C. Ramulu, Senior Manager Denis Barnabas and Deputy Manager O. P. Sharma to five years of imprisonment and imposed fines of Rs.5 lakh each on them. Senior Engineer P. L. Khadala was sentenced to four years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 3 lakh. The court was lenient towards him keeping in view that at the time of commission of the crime he had just joined BHEL and was merely a junior engineer. Engineer P. C. M. Jhammnan and Anil Kumar Goel were also awarded five years imprisonment and fined Rs. 5 lakh each, while Assistant Foreman S. N. Jha was awarded three-and-a-half years of sentence and fined Rs. 2 lakh. BHEL suspends work at Ennore plant

In what could dent the business of power generation equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), the company has been forced to suspend installation of equipment at the 1,320 MW Ennore thermal power station in Tamil Nadu following an order by a division bench of Madras High Court that cancelled the company’s contract, estimated to be worth R9,000 crore, on the ground that the PSU may not have been the lowest bidder. The contract was awarded to BHEL by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) in September last year. The high court, in its judgment delivered earlier this week, instructed Tangedco to re-evaluate the bids and pass detailed orders with reasons. “All units/division are requested to put all supplies/erection/civil activities on hold for 2X660 MW Ennore SEZ TPS with immediate effect in the interest of BHEL till further intimation,” an internal communication of the company issued by the the general manager of power sector marketing A.K Garg said. HC sets aside power project contract awarded to BHEL

The Madras High Court on Monday quashed proceedings issued by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) on September 27, 2014 for awarding contract to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited to set up two units of 660 MW Supercritical Thermal Power Project at Ennore Special Economic Zone. Allows plea Allowing a writ appeal filed by CSEPDI-TRISHE Consortium, an Indo-Chinese private venture, a Division Bench of Justices R. Sudhakar and K.B.K. Vasuki reversed an order passed by a single judge on April 7 upholding the grant of the contract to BHEL. The judgment, reserved in Chennai, was delivered here as Mr. Justice Sudhakar is at present heading the High Court Bench here. The Division Bench directed Tangedco to reconsider the bids submitted by BHEL as well as the appellant consortium since there was a huge difference between rates quoted by them.
