Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced on Monday that two more power projects of 500 MW capacity would be set up in the southern part
of the state soon.
Modi made the announcement at a function here after dedicating a 250 MW Surat Lignite Power Plant Expansion Project to the nation at Nani Naroli in Surat district.
He criticised the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government for not allowing coal from neighbouring Nagpur coalfields in Maharashtra for Gujarat's coal-based power projects.

ArcelorMittal plans India power venture - report
ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker, is planning a foray into power generation in India, the Business Standard reported on Monday, citing a person familiar with the situation. ArcelorMittal is likely to build thermal power plants first and later may consider setting up gas-based power plants, the newspaper said, adding the steel major has a small presence in India's power sector through LNM India Internet Ventures.

NBPPL hopes to bag Rs 6,500 cr projects this fiscal
NTPC-BHEL Power Projects Pvt Ltd (NBPPL) is hoping to bag contracts worth Rs 6,500 crore for executing thermal power projects in the next two months.
"We are trying, the Andhra Pradesh government has agreed to award a 600 MW thermal power project at Rayalseema in 1-2 months," NBPPL Chairman and Managing Director C P Singh told PTI in an interview.
He said that the turnkey order is worth Rs 3,500 crore.
The scope of work includes providing equipment, engineering, construction and civil works.
State-run power producer NTPC may also award a turnkey contract for its 500 MW thermal power station at Singrauli (Madhya Pradesh) to NBPPL.
"The order for the execution of NTPC's Singrauli power station is likely to come to us in 1-2 months," Singh said, adding that the contract is valued at Rs 3,000 crore

BHEL responsible for mishap at Chandrapura Thermal Project -
All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) has alleged that BHEL is mainly responsible for mishap occurred on May 7 resulting in damage to rotor of unit no. 7 and other electrical equipments at Chandarpura Thermal Project.
AIPEF has sought the intervention of Secretary Power P Umashankar so that BHEL can use the rotor of Unit 8 to run unit 7 as unit 8 is highly incomplete and in no condition to be commissioned.
.Padamjit Singh Chairman AIPEF said that the non- commissioning of the local back up protection scheme by BHEL was a major contributory factor leading to damage of rotor of unit. It had asked BHEL to mobilize its resources and personnel on war footing to commission the 250 MW Chandarpura Thermal unit 7 of Damodar Valley Corporation. The power from unit no. 7 and 8 is meant for common wealth games.
The mishap took place at Chandarpura thermal project unit 7 when the 220 KV supply from the station bus was accidentally / erroneously given to unit, which was in stationary condition. This mal operation resulted in motoring of the unit.

NTPC-BHEL JV mulls technology tie-up with global company
NTPC-BHEL Power Projects Ltd (NBBPL) on Thursday said it is exploring the possibility of a technology tie-up with a foreign player, which may be offered a minority stake in the company.
The move is aimed at bringing Indian power equipment manufacturing at par with international companies through the induction of modern technology.
“There is always a possibility of a third partner; whenever the need arises we would take a call. We are exploring the possibility for technological tie-up with a foreign company,” NBPPL Chairman C P Singh told PTI in an interview.
He said, “It (technology tie-up) may or may not be an equity partnership.”
NTPC-BHEL Power Projects Private Ltd is a 50:50 JV firm formed between NTPC and BHEL on April 28, 2008, for carrying out Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts, besides the manufacture and supply of equipment for power plants.
“There is always a shortage of power equipment manufacturing units in the country,” Mr. Singh said, adding that the JV would augment power generation capacity addition in the country.
The company currently has an order book of about Rs 450 crore. It is targeting an order book of Rs. 7,000 crore by the end of the current fiscal.
At present, NBPPL is working on the 100-MW Namrup Power Station in Assam and the 726-MW combined cycle power plant being set up by ONGC Tripura Power Corporation at Palatana, in Tripura.
It will also take up execution of the 500-MW Singrauli thermal power plant and the 600—MW thermal power plant of Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGENCO) at Rayalseema.
NBPPL falls under the administrative control of the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Industries.
The Ministry of Power has set a target for adding 78,000 MW of power generation capacity during the current XI Five-Year Plan Period (2007-12). This is likely to translate into immense business opportunities for equipment-manufacturing companies like NBPPL.

BHEL, on Wednesday, reported a rise of about 42 per cent in its net profit to Rs 1,909.58 for the fourth quarter ended March, 2010 (Q4), against Rs 1,347.47 crore in the corresponding period a year earlier.
Total income rose to Rs 14,152.63 crore from Rs 11,047.24 crore.For financial year ended March 31, it posted a net profit of Rs 4,310.64 crore, up 37 per cent compared to Rs 3,138.21 crore in the previous fiscal.Its audited financial results for FY’10 rose to Rs 34,396.67 crore .
