The Union Budget 2012 might just be the breather that the capital goods sector is looking for as it may see the implementation of an increase in infrastructure spending and a possible levy of import duty on power equipment.
The last few quarters were particularly bad for the sector as it bore the brunt of a slowdown in global economies and sluggish domestic industrial growth. During the April-January period, the capital goods index, which is the barometer of the index, declined by 26 percent due to concerns related to lower public/ private infrastructure spending, input price inflation and rising interest rates.

Sixty TN trucks carrying equipment from BHEL stuck in Bihar
A group of trucks carrying equipment for a power plant in Bihar, have been stranded for almost two months now unable to unload their consignment. The president of the State Federation of Lorry Owners Associations-Tamil Nadu (SFLOA-TN) K Nallathampi has said that nearly 60 trucks were carrying equipment from BHEL. “All the 60 trucks carried equipment from Ranipet and Tiruchy units of BHEL for a thermal plant under construction in Nabinagar in Bihar. Even after 57 days, the crew could not unload the consignments as the locals were opposing the power plant. They are suffering without proper food and shelter there,” he told mediapersons here on Sunday.
Nallathampi appealed to the Bihar and the Central governments to intervene on the issue. Moreover, he made a plea to the Tamil Nadu government to ensure the safety of crew members of the stranded trucks.
It was earlier reported that the 1,980 MW Nabinagar Thermal Plant in Aurangabad district of Bihar had to face the ire of locals over several issues including land acquisition. A few months ago, the stalemate was thought to have come to an end. However, it seems that the issue has once again been raked up by local residents.

Bhel plan delayed on power sector blues
The government’s proposed divestment in Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel), considered by a group of ministers along with that of ONGC, hinges on the outcome of the effort to address the power sector’s problems.
A senior official from the department of disinvestment said the reason for not pushing disinvestment in the company at this juncture was due to the argument by the ministry of heavy industries that the fair value of each Bhel share was around Rs 500, as against the current Rs 300. The lower value, said the official, had been attributed to power sector woes.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited : BHEL commissions record 13 MW of Solar Power Plants in 2011-12
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has set a new record in its Solar Photovoltaic (PV) business in a single year, by commissioning 13 MW of Solar Power Plants in various parts of the country during the current financial year, marking a significant contribution to the Nation's Green Initiatives.
Solar Power Projects commissioned by the company during the year include a 3 MW Grid Connected Solar Power Plant at Raichur in Karnataka, a 5 MW Plant in Rajasthan, 2 plants of 2 MW each in Maharashtra and over 1 MW in the Lakshadweep Islands. Significantly, all these projects have been commissioned by BHEL on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis.

The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited entered into an agreement with the Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital here on Saturday to help conducting 300 orbit, ophthalmic plastics and lacrymal surgeries on the BPL patients over the next two years. The assistance is being given under the CSR activities of the BHEL. General Manager in-charge of BHEL's corporate office Ashwini Kumar inaugurated the orbit and ophthalmic plastics department named after BHEL at the eye hospital. Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital has so far performed 1.33 lakh surgeries (85 per cent of them total surgeries) free of cost for the benefit of BPL patients, said HoD of orbit and ophthalmic plastics department Mallajosyula Subrahmanyam and the hospital would be able to extend its services with the help from organisations like BHEL and eradicate preventable blindness.

BHEL to pay interim dividend; stock down
Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) to pay Rs 2.72 per share interim dividend. The interim dividend will be paid on March 19, reports CNBC-TV18.
The share has touched an intraday high of Rs 303.50 and an intraday low of Rs 295.50. At 13:32 hrs the share was quoting at Rs 295.90, down Rs 3.15, or 1.05%.
It was trading with volumes of 554,941 shares. In the previous trading session, the share closed down 2.97% or Rs 9.15 at Rs 299.05.

Power woes delay critical supplies from BHEL
The Federation of Consumer Organizations in Trichy held a lengthy meeting with TNEB officials in Trichy today and threatened to sit on a one-day fast in front the Tennur office on Friday if the power situation in the city did not improve.
The TNEB had earlier announced that the power outage would be reduced to a duration of four hours from the present eight hours contingent upon the two-hour load shedding in Chennai. However, N Balakrishnan, chief engineer (distribution) who looks after seven districts in Trichy region told TOI on Thursday that spreading the supply thinly over the state did not bring the desired results and the department was pursuing a wait and watch policy for a few more days.
