The forthcoming budget could bring some cheer to domestic power equipment makers, including Bharat Heavy Electricals and Larsen and Toubro, as the finance ministry is considering levying duty on imported equipment.
"There is a proposal...we are examining it in detail," said a ministry official.
Domestic power equipment makers have for long lobbied for imposition of Customs duty on imported Chinese tools to offset some of the higher costs they incur at home.
Their key complaint against Chinese imports has been that their producers enjoy lower interest rates and an undervalued currency, giving them an edge in pricing over Indian equipments.
At present, projects under 1,000 MW attract 5% import duty while the rest enjoy duty-free import of equipment.

Poor distributed woolen clothes under ‘Anugrah’
Woolen clothes were distributed among poor under 'Anugrah', an initiative of The Times of India, at Asi Ghat in presence of HP Choudhury, general manager, BHEL and Sanjoy Sinha, senior DGM (HR) of BHEL on Monday.
The TOI launched this campaign to provide winter clothes to poor families living under open sky in cold weather. The initiative was sponsored by Indiatimes and Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL), Varanasi.
People donated old clothes, woolens, blankets for the poor. The clothes were collected at seven collection centres including at IP Mall Sigra, Sumangal Ekam Sigra, Shubham Hospital Khajuri, BHEL Varanasi, Shubham Hospital near Nagar Nigam, Raymond Maldahiya and Raymond Bhelupur. The campaign was supported by Shubham Hospitals, Jewar Kothi, Sumangal Ekam, Numero Uno, Planet Fashion Sigra, Lakshmishree Investment and Securities private limited and Raymond, Maldahiya and Bhelupur.

BHEL hands over school building
BHEL, Tiruchi, on Thursday handed over the new school building worth Rs.33 lakh it had constructed at Devarayaneri hamlet of Thirunedunkulam Panchayat, to the school management.
Dedicating the four classrooms, and two rooms for headmaster and the staff, the Executive Director of BHEL, Tiruchi, A.V. Krishnan, expressed the PSU's commitment to promote education among children living below poverty line. He advised the school children to progress through education and enable their peers to integrate themselves into the society.
This is the second building the BHEL had provided for the school. In 2008, BHEL had constructed a building with four classrooms, P.Nainar, General Manager – Human Resource, said.
S.S. Pillai, General Manager, Public Relations and Administration; S. Mahendran, Secretary, Thiruvalluvar Elementary School; D.Revathi, vice president, Thirunedunkulam Panchayat, who belongs to the Narikuravar community; and other senior BHEL officials, including P.Manoharan and T.Ramanathan, Additional General Managers, and A Antony, Convenor, CSR project, BHEL, Tiruchi, took part.
Though the school was functioning since 1980, it was only after construction of the first building by BHEL in 2008 that students evinced interest in education, Mr. Mahendran said. For carrying out CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities, the unit had allocated Rs.3.5 crore during 2011-12.
The initiative at Devarayaneri qualifies the Thiruvalluvar Elementary School, a government-aided institution, to apply for middle school status. A majority of the students in the school belong to the Narikuravar community.
According to a release, the other initiatives include construction of a compound wall at the Government ITI, Thiruverumbur; and class rooms for Government Girls HSS for the Blind, Puthur.

PSUs including NTPC, BHEL, SAIL, ONGC and IOC issuing bonus shares may be given better government appraisal
Cash-rich PSUs like NTPC, BHEL, SAIL, ONGC and IOC which will issue bonus shares, largely accruing to the government, may get a better annual performance appraisal, sources said.
The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) is working on this proposal which will encourage the top-notch PSUs to reward their shareholders by way of bonus shares.
Since the government holds an overwhelming majority shares in these companies, the benefits will accrue to it.
Under the proposal, the DPE is taking recourse to the old guidelines which stipulate that the PSUs having resources in excess of three times of their paid-up capital should immediately consider issuing bonus shares.
Companies like NTPC, BHEL, SAIL, ONGC and IOC meet the criteria under consideration.

Govt to bring ONGC, Bhel FPO next month
Finance ministry once again mulls launch of follow-on public offers (FPO) for largest explorer
ONGC and power equipment major Bhel late next month or early March 2012. Centre plans to mop up around Rs 15,000 crore by selling shares in these two enterprises as part of its last minute exercise to mop up disinvestments funds. As per government’s new dis-investment strategy, shares of three companies L&T, ITC and Axis Bank held by government owned SU-UTI would be transferred to a special purpose vehicle, which in turn would pledge them to borrow money from banks for buying government equity in PSUs.

250 MW CFBC boiler to go on stream at NLC this month
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) will commission its first unit of 250 MW lignite-powered CFBC (circulating fluidised bed combustion) boiler at Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) complex in Tamil Nadu this month.
The second unit will become operational during April-May, said A. V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi Complex, where the technology for CFBC boilers operated with non-coal fuel options such as lignite, bagasse and straw was developed.
Mr. Krishnan hoped that lignite-fired boilers of 500 MW capacity could be developed by 2017-20.
