Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) will set up a network of Solar-based Electric Vehicle Chargers (SEVC) on the Delhi-Chandigarh Highway. The project is covered under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India of the Department of Heavy Industry (DHI).
The establishment of EV chargers at regular intervals over the entire 250 kms stretch between Delhi and Chandigarh would allay range-anxiety among the Electric Vehicle users and bolster their confidence for inter-city travel, an official statement said.
BHEL’s scope of work in the project includes supply and installation of the EV charging stations along with a Central Monitoring System. Each SEVC charging station will be equipped with a rooftop solar power plant to supply green energy to fast and slow chargers planned to be installed at the location.

BHEL in talks with US company to make batteries for electric vehicles
Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete on Friday disclosed that public sector electric equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is in talks with a US-based company to form a joint venture in India to manufacture lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs).
Right now, we are importing 100 per cent of our lithium-ion battery requirements, but efforts are on towards manufacturing them in India within the next one year,'' Geete said.
BHEL comes under the administrative control of ministry of heavy industries. Lithium-ion batteries, which are a key component used in electric vehicles, are mostly imported from China at present.
Geete also said that the Department of Heavy Industries has recommended to the finance ministry that customs duty on parts of electric vehicles (EVs) should be reduced.
Now, the finance ministry has to take a decision on it, he added.
Senior officials in the heavy industries ministry earlier said that it has proposed reducing customs duty on EV parts, which are currently not exempted from the import tariff to the Department of Revenue.
To boost production of EVs in the country, the ministry has also suggested defining semi-knocked-down and completely-knocked-down kits used for assembling such vehicles for streamlining of customs duty.

BHEL complains to Rail Board on tender favouring select companies
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHELNSE 0.07 %) has written to the Railway Board saying a recent tender floated by the transporter for supply of propulsion systems favours select companies.
The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai has floated a tender for acquiring propulsion systems for 141 electric trains. BHEL, which has been regularly supplying locos and equipment to the railways, has complained that it is being kept out as the tender favours only three Indian companies. Another potential bidder from the private sector has sought more time.
In a letter to Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani, BHEL has said this may lead to cost escalation. “BHEL is getting deprived of the opportunity for being considered for bulk quantity in view of change in eligibility criteria,” BHEL chairman Atul Sobti wrote in the letter.

BHEL declares 91% dividend for FY18
BHEL booked orders worth Rs 40,932 crore in 2017-18, registering 74 per cent jump from the previous financial year, its Chairman and Managing Director Atul Sobti said Wednesday.
BHEL secured all orders for main packages of thermal power projects during 2017-18. "With this, the company has ended the year with a total order book of over Rs 1,18,000 crore - the highest in the last five years," said Sobti in the company's Annual General Meeting.
Addressing the shareholders, Sobti said in 2017-18 the company achieved a profit before tax (PBT) of Rs 1,585 crore, compared to Rs 628 crore in 2016-17, registering a surge of 152 per cent.
Profit After Tax (PAT) for the year jumped 63 per cent at Rs 807 crore, against Rs 496 crore in the previous fiscal.

Another ‘Make In India’ Success: BHEL Hits Bull’s Eye In Diversification, Rolls Out First 6000HP Locomotive
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) rolled out a 6000HP electric locomotive from its Jhansi plant for the first time. The move is significant as the engineering major seeks to access a greater chunk of the transportation market and also diversify its product offerings.
A company statement released on the occasion stated that “As part of its diversification initiatives, BHEL has flagged off of its first 6000HP electric locomotive (Type WAG-9H)“. It may be noted that the Indian Railways has placed an order for 30 such locomotives and the engine flagged off on Monday is part of the same order.
As part of its efforts to gain a bigger market share in the transportation market, BHEL has established research and development centres at its Bangalore, Jhansi and Bhopal plants. Currently, the state-run engineering major enjoys over 50 per cent share in electrical propulsion equipment for railways’ rolling stock.

TRICHY: In a first among the townships owned by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) across the country, the Trichy unit has come forward to ban the use of plastic products in the factory as well as the township. The management of BHEL Trichy has sent circulars to commercial establishments in its township insisting them to avoid circulating and selling plastic products on the sprawling 1,500 acre complex.
The environment-friendly decision was said to be taken in view of state government’s recent announcement to ban non-biodegradable plastic products in the state from January 2019.
To make BHEL, Trichy a plastic-free zone, the management has planned to organise a series of programmes highlighting environment-friendly alternatives to plastic carry bags.
