BHEL commissions 600-MW unit of Singareni project in Adilabad

BHEL today said it has commissioned a 600 MW coal-based unit at Singareni Thermal Power Project in Adilabad district of Telangana. "The unit has been commissioned at the upcoming 2x600 MW Singareni Thermal Power Project (TPP) located in Adilabad district in Telangana," BHEL said in a press release. According to statement, the project is being developed by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), India's second largest coal mining company. With the commissioning of this unit, SCCL has now successfully diversified into the power generation business. Significantly, this is the second thermal plant commissioned by BHEL in Telangana within a short span of three months. Earlier in December 2015, BHEL had commissioned a 600 MW thermal power plant at Kakatiya in Telangana. The second unit of Singareni TPP is also in an advanced stage of construction and is expected to be commissioned shortly. BHEL-built 600 MW rating sets comprise a 4 cylinder turbine, which is designed in-house, amply demonstrating the engineering prowess of BHEL. So far, the company has contracted 21 sets of 600 MW each, of which 15 have already been commissioned. A large number of similar sets ensure easy availability of spares and operator's familiarity. BHEL has a major contribution in Telangana's Power Sector, with 85 percent of the coal-based power stations, amounting to 5,180 MW, having been commissioned by BHEL. Telangana has recently placed orders on BHEL for executing around 6,000 MW of thermal power projects in the state on Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) basis. BHEL has established its engineering prowess by successfully delivering higher-rated units such as 600 MW, 660 MW, 700 MW and 800 MW thermal sets, having a high degree of indigenisation. ref: http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/bhel-commissions-600-mw-unitsingareni-projectadilabad_6008001.html

JSPL slaps Rs 123 crore ‘liquidated damages’ notice on BHEL for project delays

Navin Jindal-promoted Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) has slapped a Rs 123-crore notice on the state-run power equipment maker BHEL, citing delays in execution of projects at two units of JSPL’s 2,400 MW coal-based plant at Tamnar in Chhattisgarh. JSPL invoked the contractual clause titled ‘liquidated damages’. BHEL is executing the boiler, turbine and generator (BTG) packages for all the four units of the plant. While it commissioned the first and fourth units on schedule, there were delays of four and eight months respectively in case of the second and third units. The total contract value, with each BTG unit costing Rs 150 crore, is Rs 600 crore, which means if the JSPL’s claim is honoured, BHEL would lose 20% of the business. “We are examining the claim by the client (JSPL) and we would likely to ascertain if our estimates for liquidated damage varies from the client’s demand,” an official at BHEL told FE on condition of anonymity, adding that the PSU was willing to negotiate the matter with the power company. Another official at BHEL said that such claims often arise due to delays on the part of the client as well as other factors like delays in injection of full load power to the regional grid, a requirement for declaring a unit as commissioned. However, he admitted that BHEL has historically faced some problems in documenting delays due to reasons beyond its control. more at : http://www.financialexpress.com/article/industry/companies/jspl-slaps-rs-123-cr-notice-on-bhel-for-project-delays/227871/

BHEL completes second unit at Anpara-D thermal plant

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited has commissioned the second 500 MW thermal unit at Anpara-D Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. With this, BHEL has added 2,320 MW of generating capacity in Uttar Pradesh in the current fiscal (2015-16). This is a first of its kind project, where the power plant has been set up on an abandoned ash pond requiring special technological innovations in the area of civil engineering. Successful execution of this project has set an alternative option for future projects facing constraints of land, a BHEL release said. BHEL was entrusted with the contract for setting up two units of 500 MW each at Anpara-D TPP by Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited. The first 500 MW unit of the project was commissioned in June 2015. CRISIL downgrades rating of BHEL to AA+/Negative

CRISIL lowered its rating on long-term bank facilities of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), citing constrained business risk profile of the public sector power equipment maker. The ratings agency cut the long-term rating of BHEL to ‘AA+/Negative’ from ‘AAA/Negative’ while reaffirming the grading of its short-term bank facilities at ‘Crisil A1+’. “The downgrade reflects CRISIL’s belief that BHEL’s business risk profile will remain constrained over the medium term by continued weak profitability and stretch in working capital cycle,” CRISIL said in a statement. CRISIL observed that low capacity utilization, competitive pressures and higher material costs continue to weigh on profitability of BHEL and the reported operating loss of INR 2,322 crore for the first 9 months of FY16 was more than expected. The profitability of BHEL will remain under pressure over the near term to medium term given the difficult market conditions and intense competition, according to CRISIL. Competitive pressures and higher material costs, especially for super-critical power projects with higher import component, have impacted the company's profitability in FY16, says the ratings agency. "A slowdown in order execution has led to stretched receivables of INR 32,000 to INR 40,000 crore. This has resulted into sizeable working capital requirement over the last 4 years and the pressure may continue in the medium-term," CRISIL adds. ref: http://www.indiainfoline.com/article/news-top-story/crisil-downgrades-rating-of-bhel-to-aa-negative-116031000285_1.html
