Bhel in talks with Orascom for joint

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel), is in talks with Egypt’s Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) for setting up a joint venture to manufacture machinery and gain an advantage in winning overseas contracts.

Egypt’s electricity demand is set to grow as part of plans to set up an additional capacity of 10,000MW. Bhel is seeking a joint venture as Egyptian tenders require a domestic manufacturing base and an equipment manufacturing tie-up will also help it control costs while bidding for such projects. A manufacturing location in the country will help it service markets in Africa, West Asia and even Europe.

“We are looking at setting up a manufacturing facility for transformers and power plant parts with Orascom Construction Industries,” said a senior Bhel executive, who did not want to be identified. “We are doing our homework and have already submitted a preliminary joint venture paper with the Egyptian Electricity Authority. We are trying to ascertain the demand potential there.”

BHEL receives orders worth Rs 900 crore from ONGC

Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) has received orders worth Rs 900 crore from Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) to supply six on-shore oil rigs.

The oil major has completed negotiations and is set to issue written orders by this month end, BHEL sources told.

Four rigs will be for Sibsagar in the eastern region, one rig each for Krishna-Godavari Basin and Ankaleswar, they said adding that the first rig will be delivered to ONGC in 18 months from the date of order.

BHEL manufactures oil field equipment in collaboration with USA companies like US Steel Engineers and Consultants (National Oil Well), Skytop Brewster, Branham Industries and IRI International, USA.

BHEL now has the capability to manufacture conventional deep drilling rigs up to a depth of 9000 meters, mobile rigs to a depth of 3000 meters and well servicing rigs to a well depth of 6,100 meters, a senior official said.

"We have supplied 84 rigs to ONGC and OIL so far. They were deployed at various locations in the country. We are now taking up refurbishing work of the old rigs," he said adding the fresh order for rigs will be of different capacities.

Though the BHEL is in to making onshore rigs, it may again manufacture deep sea oil rigs as the future appears to be promising with huge oil and gas reserves at KG Basin, the official said.

BHEL bags order for solar plant in Karnataka

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has bagged a Rs 42 crore contract from Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd to set up an eco-friendly grid-interactive solar plant of 3 Mw capacity, on a turnkey basis in the state.

The contract calls for setting up a solar photovoltaic power plant at Yapalaniddi Village in Raichur district in North Karnataka, a company statement said. BHEL will be responsible for engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of the plant, apart from operation and maintenance for three years thereafter.

The plant is scheduled to be completed in eight months time. It has recently commissioned two grid-interactive solar power plants of 100 kw each in Lakshadweep.

With this, the public sector major has commissioned a total of 11 solar plants in Lakshadweep, adding over 1 Mw of solar power to the power generating capacity of the coral islands.

BHEL is one of the few players in the field of solar photovoltaics and SPV power plants in India. The SPV modules are manufactured at its ultra-modern manufacturing facility at Bangalore.

BHEL gets 94% of new orders from pvt sector

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) says private power producers, which were predominantly buying equipment from Chinese companies, are turning to it in a big way.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 20th annual conference of the Indian Nuclear Society, BHEL Chairman and Managing Director B P Rao said the company had bagged orders worth Rs 30,000 crore between April 2009 and December 2009 for erecting 11,700 Mw of capacity. Of these, 11,200 Mw were from independent power producers (IPPs), constituting about 94 per cent of the order book.

“The majority of them (IPPs) used to give these orders to Chinese companies,” he said. “Equipment performance and competitiveness is helping BHEL to win back these orders.”

However, Rao would not name the IPPs who had switched from Chinese companies to his.

BHEL in talks with global firms for nuclear reactors

With nuclear power generation emerging as a big business opportunity, state-owned BHEL has entered into talks with global players, including Alstom and Toshiba for manufacturing nuclear reactors to provide end-to-end solutions.

"Yes our interest is there in (building) reactors, we have done components and now we are looking at providing end-to-end solutions in this segment that includes manufacturing of nuclear reactors," BHEL Chairman and Managing Director B P Rao told PTI.

The company is likely to form a joint venture company with Nuclear Power Corporation of India for setting up atomic power plants in the country and has already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the same.

However, to provide end-to-end solutions, the JV would have to induct a technology partner and for that BHEL has been talking to the global players.
